It seems the Hon'be Education (Cabinet) Minister Kapil Sibal read my earlier Blog entries on the unreasonable IIMs fee hikes(Can be seen here and here). Atleast thats what I'd like to believe after hearing his latest suggestion to the IIMs to reverse the fee hike as  the fee for the IIMs' flagship Post-Graduate Management Programme hurt the students coming from middle class families.

Instead, he advised the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the nine IIMs to look at alternative sources of generating revenue like "...the alumni, sourcing money from business community, from industry." Not only advice, it seems he has worked out the mechanics of the same as well as he has been reported as saying,  "And how that is to be done, another loop has been setup to tell that. It is very difficult for academics to do this. We need some professional institutional management, how this is to be done. We have the strategy and look what should be done in near future."

Dr. Coimbatore Krishnarao Prahlad, popularly known as C.K. Prahlad, passed away after a brief illness at San Diegoat the age of 68.

A part of the first batch of management graduates churned out by IIM-A, he went on to do his doctorate from Harvard University. After a teaching stint at his alma mater, he returned to the US where he has been with the University of Michigan since 1977.

He is best known for his seminal work, The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty through Profit (2004), which was selected as one of the best books of the year by The Economist and led many organisations to look at providing goods and services to the poor as an opportunity.

He served on the board of NCR Corporation, Hindustan Lever, TVS Capital Funds and the World resources institute. He was also the chairman and founder of The Next Practice.

He had championed India’s causes in many world fora. He had a high level of commitment to India and its economic development. His strong belief in good corporate governance and ethical standards was well known. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour for his contribution in the field of literature and education.

Indian CEOs seem to be the flavour of the season. While our neighbour China has excelled in the world market as the world-preffered manufacturing hub, we seem to have arrived on the global map as the richest resource of human resource!

While U.S. President Obama is worrying about tons of back-office jobs being "Banglored", a term coined by Thomas Friedman for the shifting of these jobs to popular Indian locations like Bangalore and Gurgaon, the Indian executive seems to have climbed up the value chain fast to reach the higher echelons of global business leadership.

The latest CEO making news is the 50-year old Ajay Banga, who has been announced to be the President and CEO of Master Card. Ajay, son of an Army officer, was born in Khadki near Pune and did his Economic Hons. from St. Stephens College, Delhi University against the wish of his father to pursue an army career. He went on to do his MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad, one of the premier B-schools in the country. He has earlier worked with Citigroup, PepsiCo and Nestle, where he worked for 13 years.

Banga had joined Master Card as President & COO from CitiFinancial last year which is also headed by an Indian CEO, Vikram Pandit. Other Indian CEOs include Indra Nooyi (PepsiCo); Deven Sharma, President, Standard and Poor’s; and Piyush Gupta, CEO, DBS Group.

Incidentally, Ajay Banga happens to be the brother of M.S. Banga, the ex-CEO of Hindustan Lever Limited, the Indian arm of Unilever. However, while the mostly bald scalp of M.S. Banga is clearly visible in his public pictures, Ajay prefers to wear his turban akin to Indian PM Manmohan Singh.

As forecasted in my earlier post on the subject, the premier institutes around the nation have followed IIM-A and IIM-B, just as a flock of sheep would a good herdsman, and increased their fee (with glee!) for the academic year 2010. The major revisions are as follows:

              • IIM-C (Kolkota) hiked its fee by 50% from Rs. 9 lakhs to Rs.13.5 lakhs for 2 years
              • IIM- Shillong (RGSIIM) has more than doubled its fee from Rs.3.8 lakhs to Rs.8 lakhs
              • IIM-Kozhikode increased its fee from Rs. 8 lakhs to Rs.10 lakhs
              • IIM-Indore had recently hiked its fee from Rs. 8 lakhs to Rs. 10 lakhs
              • ISB, Hyderabad has hiked its fee by 10% from Rs. 15 laksh to Rs. 16.5 lakhs
              • IIM-L, having hiked its fee from Rs. 5 lakhs to Rs. 8 lakhs last year only, is not hiking it further

The other B-schools should be following up soon, keep watching!

              Q. Sir, I am studying B.Tech (CSE) 4th year. I am not enough good in English and always score low in the Verbal ability section of Mock CATs. I am also worried about the GDs and interview because of same reason. How can I improve my English? - A reader

              A. Good English & communication skills are essential for getting into a good B-School  , which you seem to be lacking as per your message. The problem generally arises when one is not comfortable with English as a language of communication. To improve your English, I would recommend the following strategies:

              1
. Reading: The language we read become the language we speak, therefore, it is essential to develop a healthy reading habit. Start by reading some good newspapers like The Hindu and The Indian Express.

You should also read some magazines like Outlook, India Today etc. This will help you understand ideas expressed in the English language and would also benefit you by increasing your knowledge in a diverse range of topics thereby increasing your confidence in any conversation.

While reading, always have a dictionary by your side and note down the meanings of all new words you learn in a register. In addition, I'll recommend the book Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis to help improve your vocabulary. These steps will improve your basic English vocabulary and grammar and make you more confident.

              2. Listening: It is also important to understand ideas spoken in English and for that it is a good idea if you watch some English movies, news channels or any other content in the english language to help yourself get used to the language.

              3. Speaking: The most effective way to develop good communication skills is to start speaking more and more in the English language. The best way is to start conversing in English in your day-to-day schedule with your family/ friends etc. You should try to form a group of like-minded friends who all agree to talk in English with each other whenever you meet. If you are unable to form such a group, start by practising spoken English in front of a mirror for 5-10 minutes, daily. You could act as a TV news presenter. Another way is to record your own voice in English on a cassette recorder/ dictaphone/ computer and listen to the same afterwards.
