Indian CEOs seem to be the flavour of the season. While our neighbour China has excelled in the world market as the world-preffered manufacturing hub, we seem to have arrived on the global map as the richest resource of human resource!
While U.S. President Obama is worrying about tons of back-office jobs being "Banglored", a term coined by Thomas Friedman for the shifting of these jobs to popular Indian locations like Bangalore and Gurgaon, the Indian executive seems to have climbed up the value chain fast to reach the higher echelons of global business leadership.
The latest CEO making news is the 50-year old Ajay Banga, who has been announced to be the President and CEO of Master Card. Ajay, son of an Army officer, was born in Khadki near Pune and did his Economic Hons. from St. Stephens College, Delhi University against the wish of his father to pursue an army career. He went on to do his MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad, one of the premier B-schools in the country. He has earlier worked with Citigroup, PepsiCo and Nestle, where he worked for 13 years.
Banga had joined Master Card as President & COO from CitiFinancial last year which is also headed by an Indian CEO, Vikram Pandit. Other Indian CEOs include Indra Nooyi (PepsiCo); Deven Sharma, President, Standard and Poor’s; and Piyush Gupta, CEO, DBS Group.
Incidentally, Ajay Banga happens to be the brother of M.S. Banga, the ex-CEO of Hindustan Lever Limited, the Indian arm of Unilever. However, while the mostly bald scalp of M.S. Banga is clearly visible in his public pictures, Ajay prefers to wear his turban akin to Indian PM Manmohan Singh.
