  • If Foreign universities’ If foreign universities are allowed entry in India it will immediately increase competition for Indian institutes with resultant pressure on them to improve quality.  Just as multinational companies have been transmission belts for state-of-art practices in management, foreign universities are expected to bring with them the culture of rigour and excellence in research and academic standards with possible spin-off effects on their Indian counterparts.
Indian students will benefit in terms of getting best education at moderate cost. Second, if the universities offer internationally accredited programmes in India, the Indian students will be entitled to transfer of credits globally. Third, in the context of General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), Indian students will have skills and qualifications which are transferable across the globe.
Students will however miss the international exposure. Institutes like INSEAD in France and IMD in Switzerland have become global meeting places. For instance, the 90-plus class of IMD Lausanne comprises students from over 60 countries. The learning that occurs in terms of living abroad and interacting with students from different countries is what students studying in a foreign university on Indian shores will miss.
Entry of foreign universities will not be an unmixed blessing. They come but with a commercial motive. With an ageing population, increased restrictions on immigration, fewer employment opportunities and escalation of racial abuse in countries like Australia and the UK, the foreign universities are finding it difficult to get international students. Hence, they are now trying to shift the campus to where the students (the market is) are.
It is common knowledge that the quality of education offered in these countries ranges, as in India, from very good to very bad. There are instances where several hundred students are enrolled into a class and are made to sit in different classrooms with access to the faculty on a video screen and interacting through microphones. The impact on the quality of education is easy to see.

The government must follow the WTO principles of non-discrimination and national treatment and address the issues of a level playing field.
It is the Indian institutes more than Indian students who will be impacted adversely. Most Indian institutes do not have the international orientation, financial muscle and brand equity of the reputed Ivy League institutions.
It is best that Indian students be cautious.
Not all foreign universities offer quality education. While Indian universities are known to offer some depth in terms of course
curriculum coverage, some foreign universities offer degrees more easily with
bare minimum contact hours and course
    coverage.
It also remains to be seen whether
and how best foreign universities can contextualize the course offering to make it relevant for Indian students and the needs of Indian employers. Students must also check if the degrees they offer in India are internationally accredited.

  • The impact of foriegn varsities will be such that unemployment will ncrease as reputed organisation will give preferences to students who passed out from these universities then where will a common student go and more over as a middle class family student would not be able to afford this education and if he gets a seat on scholarship basis then also he will be abided with their particular bonds, may be forcing to serve their nation.

  • Instead of talking about foreign universities we have to begin to sell courses on so many of our ancient treasures, like Indian philosophy, art, culture, tradition. Ask universities to prepare packages on any of the interesting courses specifically Indian and try selling them as courses, and extra credits to Universities abroad where they have Asian Studies. Try offering Indian studies just as Americans are promoting American studies.

  • My comment: Sir, My frank opinion is India doesn't need any kind of foreign interference in the basic formal educational sector. Foreign intervention can be introduced at higher level like specialized research area in any field. Logically Indian universities have a very good potential to produce the best quality students. Our students have proved this as millions are working abroad with Indian qualifications. Those who are going for the higher education abroad they are also students of Indian universities. Here the real difference in Indian universities and foreign universities is infrastructure and facilities. Actual knowledge base is far better in India compared to any average foreign university. If we allow foreign universities to enter in India then we will certainly face following problems: 1. Foreign universities will establish in very short period their "SHOPS" in India. 2. Most of the universities will not be able to give quality education 3. Our students will have to pay a huge amount in the form of fees. 4. Students getting these degrees will not be recognized in the home country of that university as equivalent to their main campus. 5. Our total education system will get spoilt. 6. It will become impossible for India to remove this virus of foreign universities from India in future. 7. These money minded and low quality universities will control our education systems. 8. Their chancellors will come here to distribute (sale) their degrees for which we will pay millions of Rupees. 9. There will be total damage to Indian human resource. 10. Many foreign universities don't deserve to educate us. 11. Even if some people or groups are interested to make money by collaborating with foreign universities they will also not be able to make money as these universities are very clever and have already set up many such businesses in China, Malaysia, Thailand and many other countries. I would like to suggest Indian governments that if the government really wants to bring forward the education sector try to improve the quality by standardizing quality norms in India. That is enough for us to prove our high standards. Basically those countries where people cannot speak and write English they have allowed foreign universities to teach their students in English and for getting internationally accredited degree. We are good at English so this is foolishness of our government to go for foreign universities. This simply means that we don't know our capacity and rich background. We don't want to improve so we are calling others to take us ahead and those others are looting our country. The same things which had happened before independence. I have already worked abroad with such universities with good ranking in world education. They are least bother about the quality and wellbeing of students of other countries. I am writing this with full confidence and in good faith of every Indian.
