A seminar is in progress, as we enter ITM’s Mumbai campus. A faculty member says it’s almost a weekly event. “This constant strive to bring in the corporate element makes ITM a consideration school for students around Mumbai,” says a faculty member. But Dr. A K Dasbiswas, Dean is quick to add that though the Mumbai campus is the largest and oldest, they are a national school with multiple campuses. But students say Mumbai ITM is better in terms of exposure and placements.
The school is quite strong on processes, as is evinced by the NAAC accreditation. “We wanted to be told how to improve ourselves,” says the Dr Dasbiswas. They are conscious of their lacunae. “But like most other good schools, we have cracked the teaching process to some extent,” Prof. BVR Murthy, senior faculty member puts things in context.
Though they have an in-house journal, faculty publications must grow. “Financial incentives are available to the faculty for publishing,” says the Dean. The research and the consulting domain could do with some improvement. However, the school has made an attempt to set up a centre for supply chain management within the campus, to spearhead research and consulting in the domain.
The International Exchange is a crucial component in the ITM scheme of education. The coordinator informs us with pride,” 61 of 306 students attend a trimester abroad, in France they attend the EDHEC Business School’s European Summer Program and in Budapest, Hungary the group attends a customised “doing business in Europe” programme conducted by Groupe ESSCA, a Grande Ecole institution.” Students pay independently for the same.
One of the few campuses in space-challenged Mumbai to have its own residential tower at walking distance, offering a partial residential facility for outstation students. “A comfortable place, with basic amenities,” says a hosteller.
ITM is also one of the few colleges that we reviewed, to offer a credit course for extracurricular activities. “We want students to be well-rounded,” says a faculty member. How far will this help? Students winks at us, knowingly!
