VIEW: JBIMS ranking in Careers360 B-School survey
“Students run the show,” is a common refrain across B-Schools. But with just five core faculty in place out of the sanctioned 14, JBIMS is literally a student-run campus. Students manage most of the activities of the school, right from scouting for guest speakers to planning schedules for placements.
Set up in 1965, very few institutions in the country can match the JBIMS pedigree. With a star-studded alumni, the school remains on top of the placement horizon, and consequently gets the best visiting faculty and good students. A student says, half in jest, “It is tougher to get into JBIMS than to IIM A.”
It is this level of discrimination in selections that makes the JBIMS a really great hunting ground as far as recruiters are concerned.
Visiting faculty is also a reason why the school flourishes. From practising managers to CEOs of blue-chip companies to independent professionals, the school gets the best.
“It does make our class schedules go to hell,” says a student in mock exasperation.
The independence of being a university department also helps, as it gets a certain amount of freedom with respect to curriculum structuring and delivery mechanisms. Even otherwise, a university syllabus is no constraint for offering value. Dr. Stephen D’Silva, Director, dismisses the constraints of a set syllabus. He contends, nothing prevents any teacher from offering the class essential learning. “The syllabus could always be improved upon,” is his contention.
Faculty is a constraint; the university system moves at its own pace and the department as of now has 10 positions, yet to be filled up. The college does offer training and MDPs but mostly to PSUs. More focus on these would be welcome, inform the students.
Solutions-based learning is one of the highlights of JBIMS, said another student, explaining the purpose of the annual business summit Strategym. Groups of students pick up a theme-based business problem or opportunity and suggest a detailed solution or approach to the same. A panel judges the presentations threadbare. As a learning tool, it is one of the best to evaluate the industry-readiness of the students, says a former recruiter.
As a brand JBIMS is priceless, but the challenge is to sustain its eminence by all-round performance. The school and its advisory body have a lot to do to retain its pre-eminent position.
