Housed in the campus of a school run by a trust, NL Dalmia is a self proclaimed teaching school. “We are here to teach our students to the best of our ability,” says its Director Prof. Pyre Lal Arya. “My faculty must teach first, that is their primary responsibility, other activities could come if they still have time left. The institution is clear about its positioning,” he adds.

NL Dalmia is one of the top five choices for students in the region who give the Maharashtra CET. Located at Mira Road, it’s a good two-hour drive away from the city.

It’s one of the first institutions, which gave up its right to admit students through the management quota in its MMS programme, a right which most other private schools clamour for, claims a faculty member. “We are very clear that, merit alone must enable students to get into our school,” says Prof. Arya.

Interestingly, Dalmia is one of the very few schools in Mumbai, which does not swear by visiting faculty. “We have about 30 core faculty members and they teach most of the courses,” says Prof. Arya.

“Everybody who has some professional experience cannot do it. So we pick and choose visiting faculty and train them, if necessary. Teaching is a specialised art,” says Prof. Khedkar, Dean.

The students definitely acknowledge the value-adds. NL Dalmia’s finance faculty is respected by students, even by some from other colleges. Teaching is heavy, structured and time-bound in this college. Students have uniforms, and discipline is paramount. They seem reconciled to the scenario. “It’s fine, after all some of the teachers push themselves quite hard,” says a student.

“The curriculum is constantly updated,” says Prof. V S Date, “And we do move far beyond the prescribed syllabus for the MMS programme.” Individual faculty commitment is quite visible. Prof. Anil Gor who teaches finance, shows me a list of alumni who were scheduled to speak to the students the following weekend  on the nature of their jobs, careers they could look forward to, concepts they need to be aware, emerging trends etc.

The campus is a single block of four floors carved out of a school complex and has all the essential facilities. NL Dalmia also has a residential accommodation arranged for outstation students. The cafeteria is the only place for the students to unwind. Whether they are able to do so is a different story. “We very rarely get time to unwind,” they say.

Students display substantial civility and even those who were waiting in line for placement interview, wanted to interact. The sense of cut-throat competition one normally sees in B-School session is not visible at least overtly in this campus.

Quiz Dr. Arya on this and he concludes, “I believe that if I have the time, and if you need it I must give it you. My office is open always and we teach that to our students as well.”
