  • THE economic growth of any country is determined to a certain extent by the sort of infrastructure it has. And the men who ensure good infrastructure belong to the dedicated band of engineers in various organisations, from telecom to heavy engineering and transport.

And the first step for you, is clearing the Indian Engineering Services exam. The exam, conducted at 42 centres across the country, is followed by a Personality Test conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for the shortlisted candidates.

Eligibility: Apart from nationality, age, sex and marital status; the minimum educational qualification is a degree in Engineering/ pass in Section A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India) and a few others (refer Table 1).

Fees: Examination fee is Rs. 100 payable through a single Central Recruitment Fee Stamp available at Post Offices.

Fee is exempted for all women candidates, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe  and Physically Handicapped candidates.

    About the Exam
The written examination consists of two sections: Section-I, known as General Ability Section, has only objective type questions while Section-II has conventional papers. These sections cover the entire syllabus of the engineering discipline among the four namely, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. Section-I is divided into two parts (Part A & B), where Part A comprises questions from General English and General Studies (200 marks) and is of 2 hours duration. Part B has objective type questions from the relevant engineering discipline and is further divided into Paper I & II of 200 marks each and are of  2 hours duration each.

Section II consists of questions in the specific engineering discipline, divided into Paper I & II, carrying 200 marks each but the duration of each paper is 3 hours. Thus the total maximum marks is 1000 (600 in Section - I and 400 in Section-II).  The objective type papers in Section - I, evaluated first are considered as qualifying.

The standard of papers in General Ability is such as may be expected of a Science or Engineering graduate of an Indian university. The standard of papers in other engineering subjects is broadly of an Engineering degree examination and covers the entire syllabus. For General Ability, candidates are assessed on their understanding of English and workmanlike use of words etc. General Studies includes questions from current events and of such matters of every day observation and experience. It includes questions on History of India and Geography of Nature.
