A NATION'S wellbeing depends on a reliable health service. And the people who make it possible are the doctors who offer selfless service. They join the service by clearing the Combined Medical Services examination. It is followed by personality test for the shortlisted candidates.
Eligibility: Apart from nationality, age, sex and marital status; the minimum educational qualification is MBBS degree with compulsory internship (refer Table 1).

About the Exam
Written Examination: The CMS examination consists of two Papers, each paper carrying a maximum of 250 marks and of two hours duration.
The candidates are tested in General Ability; General Medicine and Paediatrics.
The test papers in all subjects consist of objective type questions. The UPSC has the discretion to fix qualifying marks in all the subjects in the exam.
General Ability section has questions from Indian Society, Heritage & Culture, Polity, Economy, Natural Resources, Ecology and Environment; demographic trends on health, environment and society; Indian Agriculture, Industry, Trade, Transportation and Service Sectors; disaster management; public health and recent trends in Science and Technology.
General Medicine includes questions from Cardiology, Neurology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Common diseases, Nutrition/Growth etc. Paper II has queries from Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics and Preventive & Social Medicine.
Personality Test carrying 100 marks assesses the candidates’ general knowledge and ability in their academic area as also their intellectual curiosity, critical powers of assimilation, balance of judgment, alertness of mind, ability for social cohesion and so on.
