    STATE of Rajasthan hosts a new  Indian Institute of Technology at Jodhpur (120 seats), one National Institute of Technology established in Jaipur in 1963, a few prominent deemed universities including BITS Pilani which was set up on the lines of Massachusetts  Institute of Technology (MIT) and more than fifty other institutes that offer UG programmes in engineering. Out of 32 districts in the state, 11 have at least one engineering institution. Jaipur district accounts for the maximum number of colleges (44%) and the largest student intake (51%) in the state. LN Mittal Institute of Information Technology in Jaipur, a relatively new institution, has a total intake of 240.  MBM Engineering College in Jodhpur has the maximum intake of 430 among all RPET institutions. One-third of the institutions has an intake of 400 and above.  Majority of the student intake (71%) is in four disciplines: Electronics & Communications (24%); Computer Science (21%); Electrical & Electronics (14%) and Information Technology (13%). Electronics and Instrumentation with 570 seats and Civil Engineering with 508 seats, also have a fair number of takers. Those willing to pursue a course in Biomedical Engineering, can opt for 60 seats in NIMT Institute of Engineering & Technology, Kotputli in Jaipur district. Similarly there are 25 and 21 seats in Dairy and Food Technology respectively at the College of Dairy & Food Science Technology  in Udaipur.

    Admission procedure

    You must take the RPET which is followed by counselling for allocation of the preferred disciplines. The eligibility to appear for the entrance test is a pass in Class XII exam or its equivalent. RPET comprises a single exam of three-hour duration containing 40 objective-type questions in each subject, i.e., Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, making it 120 questions of one mark each. There is no negative marking. Apart from RPET, admission to some institutes is through AIEEE. The prominent institutes are Malviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur with 704 engineering seats and Mewar University, Chittorgarh with an intake of 960. One should appear for BITSAT to be eligible for 837 engineering seats in BITS Pilani. The Government of Rajasthan prescribes (except in case of private unaided institutes) reservation of seats with 16% for SC, 12% for ST and 21% for non creamy layer OBC category. There is also a provision for horizontal reservation of 3% for physically handicapped, 25% for women candidates and 3% for dependents of deceased defence personnel, ex-servicemen and gallantry award winners. Five percent of the total intake capacity over the sanctioned strength is for Kashmiri migrants.
