SARDAR Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat, now a National Institute of Technology, was established in 1961 as one of the 17 Regional Engineering Colleges. IIT Gandhinagar has also been established in 2009 with an intake of 120 seats. Most of the student intake (approximately. 85%) is in six disciplines: Computer Science (17%); Electronics & Communications (20%); Mechanical (17%); Electrical (11%); Civil (10%) and Information Technology (10%).Chemical with 904 seats; Instrumentation and Control with 780 seats and Automobile Engineering with 420 seats are disciplines worth mentioning in terms of intake. The district of Rajkot has the highest intake in Gujarat (13%). LD Engineering College in Ahmedabad with 1140 UG seats, has one of the largest student intake in Gujarat. Admission procedure Students can gain admission in Gujarat engineering colleges through the GUJ-CET or Gujarat Common Entrance Test conducted by the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC). This year onwards, ACPC is conducting online counselling for admission to all engineering colleges in the state. GUJ-CET is open only to the candidates who belong to Gujarat. For SVNIT, students have to appear for the AIEEE which reserves 85% seats for candidates from Gujarat. Candidates should have passed the HSC (class XII) exam of Gujarat State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent and secured minimum 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics added together. Candidates also must obtain a valid (non zero) score in subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics added together at GUJ-CET.
