‘GATEWAY to the East’, as the State is popularly known, is often recalled for pioneering engineering institutions. The growth in their number has been at the rate of 11% approximately since the last decade and offers fair number of options to pursue technical education. IIT Kharagpur, the first IIT, established in 1951, stands out with the highest number of seats (1187) amongst other IITs.!
Most of the intake in WB (71%) is in 4 disciplines: Computer Science (3552), Electronics & Communication (3352); IT (2882) and Electrical  (2135).

Admission procedure
In order to take the exam the candidates must have secured at least 50% marks (40% marks for SC, ST) at 10+2 level. The candidates must pass 10+2 from West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or equivalent.

JEM consists of three sections: Maths, Physics and Chemistry. There are two sessions: Maths of 100 marks and Physics & Chemistry of 50 marks each. Multiple answer questions carry 80% weightage, while 20% is short answer type. Each incorrect response results in deduction of one-third marks.
