Established in 1984, DCMS Hyderabad’s primary objective was to offer the MBBS programme to Muslim minority students. Although the college also extends services to non-minority students today, Muslim students continue to dominate the student body.
After an initial intake of 100 students, it was increased to 150 in 1996. DCMS Hyderabad is affiliated to the NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, administered by the Dar-us-Salam Educational Trust, an autonomous body set up by Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi in the year 1974.
The campus is spread over an area of 17 acres and has administrative and academic buildings, cricket and football fields, the library, which stocks over 12,000 books and close to 150 journals, and hostels for boys and girls.
The Owaisi Hospital and Research Centre, a nine-storey, highly modernised research institute and the Princess Esra Hospital and the Southern Central Railway Hospital, collectively form the teaching hospitals of DCMS, all adjoining the college premises. A Research Centre for liver diseases was also set up on campus, recently.
Famous alumni include Dr. Mohammed Sajed, Director of Stroke and Neurological Care at the Swedish American Hospital and Dr. Baseer Qazi, a gastroenterologist in Chicago, post his completion of Residency, Chief Residency and Fellowship at Lutheran General Hospital, Chicago.
