  • AT the time of independence there were just 19 medical schools with an output of 1200 doctors. Now we have  264 medical colleges that admit approximately 30,122 students per year.  While State colleges are usually large, admitting 150-200 students a year, barring a few private colleges most central and trust funded colleges like  AIIMS, JIPMER, CMC etc  offer about 50-75 seats in each college, and the competition to get into one of these top colleges is intense (view table with institute listing).

Admissions are not restricted to students from India and as a matter of fact overseas students are encouraged to study. For instance, Kasturba Medical College at Mangalore, established in 1953, admits nearly two third of its students from foreign countries. Similarly States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat have quite a few of these high-intake, high-fee colleges.  The four-and-a-half years of MBBS course is divided into three phases and nine semesters, wherein each semester consists of approximately 120 teaching days of an hour each.

As per the MCI guidelines, medical school training adopts a pattern of one year of basic science and pre-clinical subjects; one-and-a-half year of para-clinical science and two years of clinical teaching (see box). Registration is obtained after a year of compulsory rotating internship.

In most colleges, there is very little effort to integrate basic science with the clinical disciplines. The other problem areas include learning by rote, exam- oriented course work and  very little attention to developing other skills such as performance, communication or attitudinal skills

    The UG course framework

    Phase I
    Phase II
    Phase III
    Two semesters (1 year)
    Three semesters (1.5 years)
    Four semesters (2 years)

Continuation of study of clinical subjects. These include: Medicine and its allied specialties, Surgery and its allied specialties, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Community Medicine*
The objective here is to introduce the
students to a broader understanding of the perspectives of medical education leading to better delivery of health care. No student is permitted to join Phase II until he/she has passed in all the subjects of Phase 1.

Didactic lectures usually do not exceed one
third of the time schedule; two third schedule is devoted to practical, clinical and group discussions. The objective is to let the students learn through living experiences, problem oriented approach, case studies and community health care activities

During 3rd to 9th semesters, a clinical posting of 3-hour duration daily is suggested for various departments. This is done after an introductory course in clinical methods is offered in Medicine and Surgery for 2 weeks each. Besides clinical posting, rest of the teaching hours are divided for didactic lectures, demonstrations, seminars, group discussions etc in various subjects

    * Medicine and its allied specialties training include General Medicine (26 weeks), Paediatrics (10 weeks), Tuberculosis and Chest (2 weeks), Skin and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (6 weeks), Psychiatry, Radio-diagnosis (2 weeks each), Infectious diseases etc. Surgery and its allied specialties training include General Surgery (26 weeks), Orthopedics Surgery including Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation (10 weeks), Ophthalmology (10 weeks), Otorhinolaryngology (8 weeks), Anaesthesia, Dentistry, Casualty, etc (2 weeks each).
