  • OF LATE, one sees a host of deemed and  private universities offering engineering degrees, both in soft disciplines like IT and Software engineering as well as hard disciplines like Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Engineering.  The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which was set up to regulate, monitor, plan and coordinate the technical education system in the country, has cautioned students to be wary of distance education institutions offering such programmes  in the open and distance learning (ODL) mode.

In principle AICTE does not recognise programmes in core engineering disciplines which require lab facilities under the distance learning mode. So as on date any college which offers a BE/ BTech through correspondence/ online mode is doing so without approval or recognition. The DEC has accepted the same and ordered all approved universities to cease correspondence BE/ BTech offerings. But the order as on date has been stayed by the Delhi High court.

The only way one can pursue an engineering degree in the country by correspondence mode is to register for membership-based examinations of the various approved institutions of engineers. A list of most popular offerings is on the page alongside to make your decision easier.

  • Dear All, Yes, it is a very right decision of AICTE not to allow the Professional Technical Courses like-BE/B.Tech. thru Correspondence/Distance Mode. On the other Hand the ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP EXAMINATIONS conducted by the Professional Technical Insitutions in the country like-Institution of Mechanical Engineers(India)-Navi Mumbai , Insitution of Engineers(India)-Kolkatta,IETE-New Delhi etc.. are recognized by the Ministry of HRD,Govt. of India after getting the Syllabus,Course Currculum,Examination Pattern,Rules and Regulations etc.. duly examined and recommended by the AICTE. The Assiciate Membership Examinations Like-Chartered Engineers Examination []AMIMechE(I)] of IME(I), AMIE of IEI ,AMIETE of IETE etc. are recognized as equivalent ot BE/BTech. in respective field of Engineering. The Graduates from these Insitutions can apply for UPSC Examinations (wherever Engg. Degree is a required qualification) ,GATE, TOEFEL/GRE ,State and Central Govt. Undertakings , Large Private & Public undertakings etc.. for appointment/recuritment/promotion to superior posts and services. The Ministry of HRD has also granted recognition to the below Three Professional Technical Institutions to conduct Engineering Examinations at Diploma Level : 1)Institution of Mechanical Engineers (India),Navi Mumbai Name of Examination : Technician Engineers Examination[]T.Eng.in Part-I & Part-II] in Mechanical Engg. 2)Institution of Electronics and Telecomm.Engineers Name of Examination : Diploma in Electronics & Telecomm. []DIPITE] 3)Insitution of Civil Engineers(India) Name of Examination : Technicin Engineers Examination[]T.Eng.in Part-I & Part-II] in Civil and Architecture Engg. Graduates from above Professional Insitutions can also take admission to Management and M.Tech. courses at various Universitites and Institutes subject to fulfilling thier eligibility creteria for such P.G. Courses. This is just for information pl. Thanks & Regards, Anuj Tyagi
