Duration of the programme: Minimum 2 yrs. from the date of registration (3 yrs. for External candidates) & Maximum 6 yrs. However, Assistantship/Fellowships will be payable for duration fixed by the MHRD or date of submission of thesis, whichever is earlier.

Full-time Research Scholar:
- Institute Research Scholars with Teaching Assistant (TA)
- Govt./ Semi Govt. Fellowship Awardees (FA QIP, CSIR, UGC, DAE, DST, DBT, NBHM, etc.)
- Sponsored candidates (SW)
- Selffinanced (Indian/Foreign)/Study Leave (SF)
- Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Awardees (Foreign Students)
Part-time Research Scholar:
- Institute Faculty/ Staff (IS) (for permanent faculty/ staff of IIT Bombay)
- Project Staff (PS) (for Project staff of IIT Bombay)
- Research Assistants (RA)
- External candidates (Sponsored) (EX)
- Candidates working from Colleges / Educational Institutes (CT)
General eligibility criterion for admission in all areas:
- First class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ ST) or equivalent Master’s Degree in Engineering/ Technology.
OR
- First class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ ST) Master’s degree in Science or a first class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ ST) in Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology.
- Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements:
- You must earn valid GATE score - CSIR/ UGC/ NBHM/ DBT award.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional work experience.

Application Fee: Cost of Application Form is Rs.300 for General (GN), OBCNC and PC (Physically Challenged ( belgonging to GN category) candidates & Rs.150/ for SC/ ST and PC (Physically Challenged ( belgonging to SC/ ST category) candidates to be paid only in form of Demand Draft drawn in favour of “Registrar, IIT Bombay”. payable at SBI/Canara Bank, IIT Powai Branch, Mumbai400 076.
Note: However you can write maximum three departments in one form (including interdisciplinary areas) and if you want apply for more than three departments applicant can use another form by paying separately.
