JUST eleven out of the top 32 institutions in the objective ranking list find a place in the perception ranking. Of the 11, seven are in the public sector and only five have substantial web presence. In fact, Sikkim Manipal alone polled about 8% of the total sample size with over 500+ unique IP addresses, showing the substantial reach technology could achieve.

The objective data results have not changed much. Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the leviathan with 500+ programmes and 3 million plus students still retains the pole position in India’s first-ever objective rating of Distance Learning Institutes. But not so surprisingly IMT has improved its ranking in objective criterion. It has moved one level up to third position. The fact that it is a specialised institution focussed on management helped it a lot. This year with the change of guard at DEC, their database is in shambles and we could get only fresh data from 14 institutions. India has a long way to go in ensuring availability of comparable data (scroll down to view ranking methodology)

In 2010, we examined the top institutions under three broad domains namely, Reach & Resources, Learning and Experience, and Results & Efficiency, and the Top 10 were populated by five open universities, three private players and two dual mode State-level universities. And collectively the scores show the sector needs substantial investments in all three stages, input, process and output. In 2011, we have also ranked institutes based on these parameters (scroll down to view).

METHODOLOGY

The Universe for Open and Distance Learning Institutes (ODLIs) in India comprises 249 institutes, out of which 188 institutes are currently offering Distance Education Programmes. Given the nature of operations of ODLIs and the lack of adequate data with the Distance Education Council (DEC) as also in the public domain, shortlisting of top 50 institutions was done even this year on the basis of student enrolment data.

The logic being the popularity of the institutions, on the basis of their admissions. Careers360 then sent letters to these 50 institutions and based on the responses received from the institute as well as the data supplied by DEC, 32 institutes were finally chosen for ranking purpose. Further, visits were made to all the institutes that responded as well as to select study centres of others to build a robust database.

The input primarily looked at the reach, infrastructure and diversity of the institutions in providing distance education. The process emphasised on the quality of resources and delivery mechanism, while output focused on the performance of the institute in facilitating the trained student in getting a better prospect.

The parameters and the weights are as follows:

For the first time, we also brought out a perception-based ranking for DL institutes. Careers360 in association with Yahoo! India spearheaded the huge exercise that involved collating data on all the existing DL institutions with its attendant difficulties, as well as managing the online survey. READ MORE!

sir,i am doing BCA from sikkim manipal university .my study centre is in jodhpur(rajasthan) . smu is a state -private university of sikkim state .can it open its study centre outside state because it is not clear that a state university can open study centre outside its state till now? it is legal?

Kindly DEC/UGC/AICTE should publish the latest joint commitee approved universities list so that their should be transparency in the system. Universities are misleading students and spoiling their valuable time and money as their is no or in time information available for taking admission to universities. Example if I check for joint commitee approved list of universities in DEC website we find the old 2009 list. Kindly publish or make available the latest list of universities approved by the Joint commitee i.e. UGC-DEC-AICTE. Also DEC-UGC-AICTE websites should release latest approved and unapproved list of course/programs monthwise so that students should be clear about the education system. Websites should carry the latest information and should be easily understood by the student community.

I want to do MBA in distance eduction & i had short listed Alagappa university karaikudy.I came to know that they had a study centre at (kottayam-vazoor )in kerala, But kindly suggest me that if they had got necessary approval ,validity etc although they claim that they had got A grade from NAAC.Kindly let me know if there MBA had got validity ,approval from DEC etc.

sir i am doing BCA fourth semester from sikkim manipal university from jodhpur(rajasthan) study centre .at this time a state university can not open its study centre in another state or beyond its state .so i want to ask my degree is valid as my study centre is in rajasthan and smu is a state-private university of sikkim.it is told in ur magazine that it is not clear till now that a state univ can open its study centre in other state or not . you have given good ranking in ur survey to smu.but please clear the doubt .will my degree will be eligible for getting higher education n job or not .there will be now problem about validity of degree.

@Pankaj SMU is a DEC approved UGC recognised institution. so its degrees are valid. @ Swapan. Distance learning B.Tech and its validity is as of now in a cloud. we would suggest not to go for it until the law is clear. @ Girish. Some states like TN and Maharashtra have banned M.Phil by correspondence. UGC still has not taken a call on the same. So hold on until the law is clear or do a PART Time Mphil. If you inform us your location we must be able to identify if there is a university offering M.Phil there.

@amit, Eco (Hons) is a much sought after course. Post that you could intern with good consulting companies, seek out and join MBA programmes and if you crack the entrance you could also do M.Sc/MA (Eco) offered by institutes like DSE, JNU or IGIDR. So study well.

ankur existing Govt. regulations do not allow pursuing two degrees simultaneously, unless they are dual degree programmes approved by a single university. so in case you apply for a Govt./ PSU position you could only use either one of the two degrees you are pursuing.

Sanjib quality MBA's demand quality time. For example IIFT in delhi offers a weekeend executive programme. FMS delhi offers a a part time MBA. Both are very good but demand substantial commitment form you. IMT offers a PGDM which is good. It is rated the best by Careers360. IT is also one of the few AICTE approved PGDM programmes.
