Q. Respected Sir, I have completed 10+2, and plan to pursue my degree (BSc psychology/Sociology) through correspondence from University of Madras. I am also interested in Media/Journalism. I want to know which of the 2 courses has good prospects in terms of career growth & opportunities & whether I will have any problem in my PG admission ?
Ajay
A. According to extant Government of India notifications, all degrees obtained through distance learning are considered fully equivalent to regular degrees, provided the college/ university is approved by the Distance Education Council (DEC). Since University of Madras is DEC approved, your undergraduate degree is fully valid. Having said that, some professional institutions that offer journalism diplomas do place a premium on full-time programmes. But that should not deter you.
A Bachelor’s degree in English or Visual Communication would be better suited to a career in media. But Sociology and Psychology will also provide you enough insights to pursue the same. Develop a healthy interest in current affairs, and follow national and international events keenly. A critical mind and keen sense of language are essential for a good media professional. So develop good reading habits and make it a point to keep a blog. Also contribute to college magazines, newsletters etc.
Q. Is there is any distance learning course for diploma in petroleum engineering?
Nishant Gupta
A. Nishant, petroleum engineering is a specialized discipline and mastery in the domain can only be acquired with lots of laboratory sessions. Hence it makes sense to do the same in the regular mode, if you seriously want to make a career in the domain. But some universities like the Sagar University and Dr. BR Ambedkar Technological University amongst others, do offer courses in this domain.
Q. I have done “B” level of DOEACC society after 10+2. Am I eligible to do distance MBA on the basis of the “B” level that is equivalent to MCA as per the notification of MHRD (Higher Education) Govt of India? Kindly reply as soon as possible, its urgent.
Sonu Raj
A. Sonu, a “B” level course is definitely equivalent to a graduate degree programme. But the Govt. notification provides such equivalence only for the purpose of employment in Govt. and public sector organisations. In many court cases, different courts have ruled that the senate of a university is the ultimate authority as far as recognition of degrees/ diplomas are concerned. So if the university you want to pursue an MBA from approves a ‘B” level certification as sufficient qualifications then you can pursue the degree. A “B” level certificate does not automatically make you eligible for higher studies.
Q. Is MBA under Tamil Nadu Open University by distance mode recognised as well as valid?
Vinoth
A. Yes. Vinoth an MBA from TNOU is a fully valid degree. You can apply for a PhD programme after the completion of the course. But ensure that you get more than 55% in aggregate or a first class in the same. Most universities expect you to have a first class or over 55% to be eligible for applying to the research programmes.
