Rankings! India's best B-SchoolsA student’s expectations of a B-school depends on their understanding of what constitutes good education for them. However, individual values and priorities apart, they all want good teachers, comfortable spaces, and value-for-money education, and at the end of it a lovely job. And they are willing to work very hard to get it.

Manu Sharma, student of Great Lakes Institute, says, “Extreme pressure at the school is welcome as it helps us deal with any situation where work load is immense”. But they would want the school to respond equally well. As the cost of management education shoots up, expectation levels too are rising.  The astronomical Rs one crore plus salary offers also do their bit to raise the bar. That only a handful of students get such offers is not widely appreciated. The ‘over promise-under deliver’ paradigm under which most schools operate does not help either.

The survey results explain in detail why schools have a long way to go in meeting the student aspirations. Across the board, there is not a single B-school in the country that has performed sufficiently well on all the parameters. Take the top schools; while MDI (the first rank holder in private) is very good at MDPs, it performs poorly at consulting where XIMB excels. On the other hand, the top three public-sector schools do quite a bit of consulting, but not as many MDPs. Across the board, none of them score well on international publications. While the quality of publications are better in case of MDI and IIM-B, IMT-Ghaziabad scores on sheer numbers.

In terms of international exchange programmes, none of the surveyed institutions have acquitted themselves well. The top few players do have  a good student exchange programme, but faculty exchange is poor. International faculty is still a novelty in most schools. While Great Lakes manages to score well on this count, it fails miserably when it comes to core faculty to student ratio. What is heartening is the slow progress in the Tier-1 and Tier-2 spaces. Many have a publication record and most do a bit of consulting. The schools who are in the reckoning have realised that big buildings can only take them so far.  Sidhartha aptly sums it, “It is good faculty that  makes an institute; the rest is all extra”. It is high time  institutions realise the same. Choose the right school. It would make all the difference.

We have attempted to present both the public and private sector separately, primarily from the point of view of ease of comparison and are driven by different set of values. But the parameters have been kept the same and scoring based on same algorithm. The scoring is based on a Max: Min Schema. So invariably one institution would get the maximum marks for each parameter and one or more would get a zero. The beauty of such an evaluation is that the if the data has integrity, natural clusters would be formed which can then be identified as a particular Tier. In both public and private school’s ranking there are natural cluster formation providing us a certain level of confidence with respect to our data and processes.

    • A major issue in schooling is prtenaal involvement. Unfortunately parents these days are absent (not in the household) or too busy with their own lives (talking on the phone, clubbing, or finding a new baby daddy) to concern themselves with their offspring. I have to give some credit to those who are absent because they are working many of those cases the absence are due to the need to keep a roof over the heads of the family. I was raised in a large military family there were 7 of us at one time, scrunched into base housing and my Dad was gone to the base before I ever woke up. When he came home for dinner he was there for less than an hour before he was off to his second job and I was in bed before he came home from that. Mom held down the household and sold Avon while we were at school. Despite those pressures, they were BOTH constantly on top of us kids to make sure we were doing our schoolwork and succeeding. Sorry for rambling there but I know some parents WANT to spend more time with their children but have to provide for them first You've all seen the parents that expect the school system to raise their kids for them if you haven't then you're deaf, blind and can't read braille! Some teachers will go the extra mile for students while some only show up I had both kinds and so did my (grown) children. Tenure systems and Unions keep some of the dead wood in place unfortunately. Ultimately though, it is Mom or Dad (hopefully both) that is responsible for guiding their children to adulthood. The high school I went to had 2 tracks similar to what AJ describes although I graduated in '82 (*cough* OLD MAN ALERT! *cough*). The tracks were: 1) College Prep which had a 22 credit requirement and a 2) General Diploma which only required 18 credits to graduate. You had the opportunity to take 6 credits each school year; those in the General program typically had no desire to attend college while those in College Prep were doing just that, prepping for college. The General track didn't stop you from attending college many of my friends who were in the General track immediately entered into college and graduated 4 years later. I was in the College Prep side, but having no money (remember all those kids?) to pay for college I joined the military; I didn't get my B.A. until 2005 so much for my College Prep track! My point is twofold: Point 1) Children should not have to navigate through school on their own. Parents NEED to be in their children's schools as best they can. They NEED to make sure their children are attending and doing their homework. Rob (comment above) is indicative of that type of parent. He and his wife PARENT their children. Point 2) is that these tracks in school will hold you back only if you let them! You were misled by a Guidance Counselor but you are in college now and THAT is what is important don't let what happened in 2003 define your success.Great topic and great points AJ. As a country we have to do better. We can chant USA all day and point out how advanced we are, but when you look at education levels compared to other countries we are behind and I don't mean we're falling behind either because we're already there! Our country lags in math and science expertise already and with some of our society today even the english language is in peril! I'm not pointing a finger at immigrants I'm talking about slang and text-speak being seen as acceptable language.Kudos to you Ashley for bringing a young voice into an area ignored for too long. Keep your light shining bright!

    • Why haven't you not mentioned "Sri Satya Sai Univeristy" whose MBA in finance is one of the best in South India. Strange thing is that many magazines/surveyors ignore it. Could you clarify? There is lots of competition for so few a seats.Placements are superb. 1)MBA-General= 2 years URL:http://sssihl.edu.in/dnn/LinkClick.aspx?link=141&tabid=60 2)MBA in Finance-2years: URL http://sssihl.edu.in/LinkClick.aspx?link=577&tabid=60 Unique part during admission in these MBA courses are that "Eligible candidates will be short-listed by the University based on the marks of qualifying examinations. Only such candidates will be called for Admission Test."
