THE north cluster covers States of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand consisting of around 50 institutes. It does not include institutes in Delhi-NCR region and Rajasthan.
The Department of Management Studies at IIT Roorkee in Uttarakhand is best among the lot and forms a part of those B-schools in the north which are departments operating out of engineering colleges. Its MBA offers dual specialisation in the fields of Marketing, Finance, IT, Operations and Human Resource Management. It gives an opportunity for doctoral research to meritorious students. Lovely Institute of Management offers BSc as well as MPhil in management apart from other postgraduate and PhD courses. The BSc’s curriculum is managed by University of London International programmes.
In terms of ranking, the College of Agribusiness Management at Pantnagar has improved a lot in the last decade. Some institutes which have been continuously losing their place are Gian Jyoti Institute of Management & Technology and Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE). University Business School (UBS) in Chandigarh and Chandigarh Business School are also chosen by candidates often. It was earlier known as the Department of Commerce and Business Management but was renamed by the Punjab University to let it build its own identity. It offers six MBA programmes in different specialisations such as Biotechnology, Human Resource, International Business and E-commerce. Institute of Management Studies in Dehradun is also a good option with both its degree and diploma courses in management. The institute also adds courses in Mass Communication and Law to its credit.
Talking of Jammu and Kashmir, the State has only two B-Schools, The Business School (University of Jammu) and College of Management at Mata Vaishno Devi University. The State’s demography as well as political scenario can be thought of as reasons for this small number. Overall in the cluster, schools especially in private sector have to push up to join the race.
