  • SPEND time on analysing your strengths & weakneses to understand your potential & set road map for success

RENU came to me feeling like a failure and totally inept. She is studying in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and somehow no matter how hard she tries she just cannot get the marks she deserves. I spent some time understanding her study patterns and eventually gave her a small essay to write. The concepts Renu introduced in her write-up were very good and to the point. But unfortunately her grammar and her writing skills left much to be desired.

Coming from a vernacular medium to a prestigious institution is a source of pride to all but the competency level in certain areas needs to be dramatically stepped up to succeed in that set-up. My suggestion to her was to build her skill-set in English to such an extent that her language would do justice to the sophistication of her thought.

    Analyse your abilities

All of us in our respective careers need to spend a little time analysing our skills, competencies and abilities. If at one side of the scale we put all our strengths then on the other side our weaknesses, inabilities will weigh us down and prevent us from reaching our full potential. For example, you may be good at understanding the concepts in science but when it comes to solving numerical problems you begin to stumble. Or another student maybe able to solve the problems but does not have adequate speed to crack the competitive exams. That means even though these students have the necessary understanding and ability within their subject area, owing to one weakness they cannot achieve the goal they have set for themselves. Thus for fulfilling their potential these students would have to work upon their problem-solving and speed to eventually achieve what they truly deserve.

    Identify your weakness

If you fail in a project or perform at a level lower than your expectations, ask yourself the following questions. Did I understand the subject matter? Was I able to express the content in a manner that was required by the examiner? Did I manage my time well before the assessment? Was I able to revise the key points appropriately? Answers to these questions and other questions like this will enable you to perform at your optimum best. For honestly acknowledging your weakness to yourself is really the first step each of us needs to take in the journey called success. Once you know that you have a difficulty in a certain area you can think about ways to overcome it. For instance, in Renu’s case developing her English language ability can make a huge difference to her ability to succeed in IIT where all exams and eventually job interviews are always in that language.

    Working on your limitations
    • Identify your weakness or challenge area.

    • If it needs new skills, seek help – from books, tutors, friends, etc.

    • Develop a plan to practise the new skill.

    • Stay focused and maintain a positive attitude; don’t be overwhelmed by your challenge area.
    Seek help

By no means do I wish to imply that each one of us needs to be perfect. But if your lack of ability to meet deadlines is consistently making you lose grades in the internal assessment, then you need to work on your time management skills such that your grades represent your true capability.

Once you have identified your limitation take time to assess if you need help in improving it. In some case just talking to a friend and understanding the strategies they are using can give you an insight. I think what we learn from our peers or classmates should never be underestimated. A friend who is achieving the goals you desire can be the right mentor for you as it is easier to observe and emulate the study habits of our friends closely.

    Enhance your understanding

If your weakness is emerging from lack of understanding or knowledge then raising the right questions in class can enable you to get the extra help both from your teachers and your friends. Increase the number of people and number of books you read on that topic till you reach a certain level of understanding. This kind of tenacity, even though time consuming, is what separates the winners from the “also-rans” of life.

Think of your weaknesses as little leaks that your pitcher of life has developed on the way and if you fix those leaks you can eventually see yourself overflow with the ability to accomplish your goals successfully.

  • Dear Ramsa, In my opinion there is no one goal, one skill or one ability that will help us meet our dreams. Learning opportunities are around us all the time. It is for your decide whether you want to go all out and put in your best foot forward. If you will read this months issue you will notice many achievers have not allowed the lack of resource to come in the way of their achievement. Improving your language for instance can be done from a newspaper, a good radio show or a TV programme. Just observing and paying attention to how good language is used and written can make a lot of difference. Working in a neighborhood office or business can give you an opportunity to refine your computing, communication, organizational skills etc. Instead of feeling the lack feel the abundance in your life and take every opportunity that comes your way and wring it for all it can offer you.I think there is no golden opportunity there are golden people who make every opportunity golden - good luck and walk the path of success.

  • Dear Anamika, I would like to congratulate you on joining your studies back. Once you have a degree you will feel n increased sense of confidence in yourself and believe the battle in life is more about facing challenges with confidence than anything else. My suggestion would be dont do anything with fixed ideas. Complete your Bachelors for the moment. Once you complete that - rather than a Masters look at some job oriented vocational courses. Dont let your age bother you - for some jobs and positions age will be an issue - but in the private sector employers will look at the skill set you can offer. Since you are doing the Bachelors by DL - also consider the possibility of working aprt time in an office close by to your resume. All the very best and I am sure one day your children will be proud of you. Good luck

  • I can relate to your anxiety about becoming too specialized Many of us who work that long can find ourselves in a similar situation. however the. Very fact that you have worked for 10plus years in your domain I am confident that. A little introspection would help you to identify some transferable skills you have picked up as well. I would suggest two things. Spend some time identifying the industry specific or job specific skills you have picked up but spend a larger chunk of time identifying skills you have picked up incidentally. For example presentation skills, team building, training etc. Several of these. Soft skills are transferable. Also identify areas within which you can grow either via further education, continuing eduction or short skill workshops. Yes detailed counseling will help in your case as you have considerable experience and I am confident you have many domains in which you can still succed.

  • I have come across a situation in my career where I feel that my skill sets are limited. I have focussed in one area of industry has limited my exposure and have already put across 10.8 years of work experience in the same area, however I am looking at enhancing my skill sets and venture into next level of my career either in the same industry or in the different industry building on my core competency. I would like to take up career counselling or if required any specific course which will be a guide for my career path. Need help on the same.

  • practice as they say makes each person perfect. if you understand half the battle is won. try and make friends with people with whom you can practice your skill. otherwise talk to the mirror, taping your voice sometimes helps to understand your weak areas but also your strengths.

  • Weakness of any kind is nothing to be ashamed about. Each one of us as our share of weaknesses and it is good that you are able to identify yours. Acknowledging a weakness is the first step towards solving it.If it is causing you sadness then maybe it is time that you did something about it. The good thing is stammering is not incurable (unless there is a biological defect - which does not seems so in your case). I have known many successful people who have overcome it. There is an The Indian Stammering Association which runs self-help groups - maybe connecting with them could be your first step. Internet also is full of techniques to overcome stammering. Focus on the solution. To quote Frank McKinney "There is no failure except in no longer trying. There is no defeat except from within, no really insurmountable barrier save our own inherent weakness of purpose." work at it and you will surprise yourself
