There are two similar terms which are automobile and automotive. Both are almost the same but there is a slight difference between them. Automotive engineering refers to the overall development of a vehicle from design to production and maintenance. Automobiles basically deal with the design of four-wheelers, but some two-wheelers are also considered automobiles. In the automobile industry, there are many types of automobiles like petrol vehicles, diesel vehicles, electric vehicles or battery vehicles, steam engine vehicles, gas engine vehicles, etc. Different types of automobiles have different types of designs, mechanics, and components. Each component plays a specific role in an automobile. So, according to their design, mechanics, and components, there are many applications of mathematics that can be put to use.

## Application In Design

Design is a very important aspect for any object as well as for any automobile. Everything about an object design, from sizing components to determining performance is based on maths. Without maths, creating an automobile would be trial and error with over-designed items being insufficient, and under-designed items being death traps. There are two types of design one is interior design and another one is exterior design which is given below.

### Interior Design

A lot of geometry and trigonometry goes into the science of interior layout. The placement of every gauge, switch, dial, and readout in the automobile is precisely calculated within a certain set of measurements because these measurements play a role in the placement of pillars, supports, and dashboard.

### Exterior Design

It is an artistic process with a blend of science and maths. For external design, geometry is the ground of all shapes that creates one object: rectangular and square shapes, circles, trapezes, and splines.

Mathematics is involved at every stage in the automobile industry as well as at the production stage also. Many workers, engineers, managers and even machines use mathematics in their daily work practices such as calculation, reasoning, communication embedded, etc. Mathematical activity is usually a part of their primary task of producing goods.

### Workers

They are involved in the actual manual labour of making a complete automobile and its component parts. They use basic mathematics such as geometry to know how much space they need, and what types of objects they are making. They also use simple calculations in their daily routine.

### Engineers and Machines

Engineers deal with complex mathematics. They are specialists in their field so they use probability and statistics, combinations, algebra, coding theory, etc. to solve complex problems.

### Managers

They are responsible for managing the specific department of an organisation. They also use statistics to conduct performance reviews and make good decisions.

## Application In Working Principle

Before we discuss the working principle of automobiles, we must know about automobile engines. So, an automobile engine is a machine that converts heat energy into mechanical energy. There are two types of automobile engines,

• The external combustion engine, where fuel burns outside the combustion chamber such as turbines and steam engines.

• The internal combustion engine, where fuel burns inside the combustion chamber such as petrol and diesel engine.

In automobile engines, we use a carburetor which is a device to provide a proper ratio of the mixture of air and fuel for easy combustion in the engine. The working principle of the carburetor is based on Bernoulli's principle. This states that pressure decreases with the increasing velocity of the fluid.

Mathematics also plays an important role in transmission (this allows to shift gears at the appropriate time), braking system (braking distance needed to safely stop), to determine all dimensions of the piston, shafts, gears, combustion chambers, length and width of pipes to control pressure and volume of fuel and air, etc.

## Application In Financial Management

The relationship between mathematics and finance is very deep, far deeper than what we can expect. Mathematical insight within finance translates into being able to make more money, seeing success with higher degrees of certainty, and minimising and hedging the necessary risks because it allows us to predict exactly how much money we can make or how much risk is there, or we can learn how to minimise risk by selecting the right combinations of financial instruments.

• Accounting: Keep track of all records, incoming and outgoing, Keep track of stocks and bonds. Calculate interest and equity.

• To Calculate the cost of an object and determine the fair market price.

• To Analyse Market risk. If you don’t know how much risk is there you can not determine how much capital you need to hold.

• Economics: To calculate the future results using simple models, Supply and demand, Money supply based on current macro actions and trends,

• Predict future results based on complex models. Calculate net present value.
