One of the core branches of engineering, Chemical Engineering has struggled with placements even at some of the top institutions in the country – including the IITs. In fact, the only engineering college in Careers360’s analysis to post a placement rate of 100 per cent for BTech in Chemical Engineering is a National Institute of Technology (NIT). At some colleges, the placement rate was below 60 per cent.

Among the core branches of engineering, chemical engineering departments have struggled with placements but have still done better than Civil Engineering in practically all top colleges across the country. The only exceptions to this placement trend in 2020-21 are IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur.
Students of chemical engineering across 15 public technical institutions saw an average placement rate of 71.2 per cent. These 15 institutions rank among the top 25 engineering colleges as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF 2021). These include several IITs, National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and so far, one state institution, Jadavpur University.
Careers360 analysed placement data obtained from 15 engineering institutes through a Right to Information application to understand how students of different colleges, studying the same subject and pursuing the same degree, fared when it came to landing engineering jobs and salary packages.
Institutes that do not offer the programme or shared data that was not entirely clear were left out of this analysis.
IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur and NIT Surathkal did not share the total enrolled students data for 2020-21, hence these colleges were left out in the analysis represented in the graph below.
Around 60.5 per cent of enrolled chemical engineering graduates were successfully placed. A total of 226 enrolled students did not secure any placements. Among the students who registered for placement, 71.2 per cent found a job while the remaining 28.8 percent, which is 140 students, did not.
Among all the 15 engineering institutes that shared placement data for the analysis, the placement percentage for chemical engineering is quite variable. It ranged from 55.56 to 100 per cent.

Among all colleges, two NITs – NIT Rourkela and NIT Surathkal – had the top placement rates for this branch of engineering, beating even the top IITs. IIT Ropar, a new-generation IIT, had a better placement record than IIT Roorkee, one of the oldest IITs.
Only NIT Surathkal, NIT Rourkela, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kharagpur have better placement records in chemical engineering as compared to their college overall placement percentage.
