Computer Science and Engineering both are well paying career choices. Graduates from both streams do well in campus placements across engineering colleges. But how computer engineering students from different colleges – Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and National Institutes of Technology (NIT) and state institutions – fare against each other? Careers360’s analysis of official data throws up a few surprises.

Of all the branches of engineering taught in India, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is perhaps the most in demand. Students emerging from top institutions with a BTech in CSE tend to get the best offers and land the highest salaries during placements. This is certainly true of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), India’s premier public technical schools.
But how well do Computer Science Engineering students do across colleges? Careers360 analysed the placement performance of one batch of BTech CSE students who graduated from 15 of the top 25 engineering colleges, as ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2021. These include 11 IITs (a mix of old and new), three National Institutes of Technology (NIT) and one state university – Jadavpur University.
Data obtained through an RTI application shows that CSE departments across institutions routinely posted the highest – or close to the highest – placement rates in the 2020-21 placement season.
Overall about 94 per cent of the registered CSE students secured a job. Just 50 students out of 903, who sat for the placement programme, did not get a job. With 81.25 per cent, the lowest placement percentage was of IIT Madras.
Three top IITs - Delhi, Kanpur and Kharagpur did not share any information about the total students enrolled and so have been omitted from the list of analysis in the graph below .

Just like the electrical department of top engineering colleges across India, the CSE department too had a placement better than the overall placement of each institute.
IIT Madras is the top engineering college as ranked in NIRF 2021, yet its CSE placement percentage was one of the lowest. The only ones to place all registered students were IIT Ropar and two NITs [Surathkal and Calicut].

Out of the 44 students enrolled at IIT Madras, CSE department, 32 students sat for the placement programme in 2020-21 and only 26 CSE students were offered placements.
As per the data shared via the RTI application, IIT ISM Dhanbad had three students more registered for placement than the total enrolled students. This could be due to lateral entry however, there was no clarity in the RTI so, we have used the information as it was provided.

The CSE branch commanded some of the highest salaries and were instrumental in raising the average salary for each of the institutions.
The present analysis does not include salary details from IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee as their RTI responses did not include this data.
CSE departments at some colleges show more than 100 per cent better salary packages than the overall salary package.
