TED Conference is an American media organisation. The organisation posts talks on online platforms for free distribution. Richard Saul Wurman conceived the TED and then co-founded it as a conference with Harry Marks in February 1984. Earlier, TED made emphasis on design and technology but later broadened its perspective and included the talks on cultural, political, humanitarian, academic and scientific topics.

As they work under the slogan “ideas worth spreading”, the locally-driven ideas are celebrated and elevated to a global stage in TEDx talks. TEDx talks are independent events similar to those TED conferences in presentation but based on TED’s rules and format. Careers360 curated 7 TEDx talks that are significant for the students.

    1. After Watching This, Your Brain Will Not Be The Same

    Why watch this?

How do we exactly learn? Why do some of the students learn things more easily and faster? Why are some skills easier to memorise and learn than others? Why do we tend to forget what we learned? These questions fascinate researchers and students.

Based on classic research, Dr Lara Boyd who is a brain researcher at the University of British Columbia explains in her TEDx talk how neuroplasticity gives you the power to shape your brain. She also explains the misconceptions about the brain and its functioning, how the brain supports learning by changing itself and how you can build the brain you want.

Students can refer to Dr Boyd's TEDx talk to improve long-term memory. The changes in our brain occur all the time as it is highly plastic. Memory depends on how the brain changes and forms new connections. By the time you finish watching this TEDx talk, your brain will have changed. The most interesting fact about the brain is that it doesn't change in the same way for all but differently for each person who watches this.

    2. How To Get Your Brain To Focus?

    Why watch this?

After watching this TEDx talk, you will know how to harness attention to get distracted less, focus deeper and become more creative. What does technology have to do with our attention and ability to focus? Chris Bailey, the author of the book “Hyperfocus”, explains how our ability to focus is the key to creativity, productivity, and thus living a meaningful life. Our mind craves distraction in the first place. What is the primary cause of distraction? Is it a distraction or overstimulation that makes us unable to focus? How to set your mind at the lower level of the stimulation. There is a mechanism known as “novelty bias” due to which our mind rewards us with a hit of a wonderful pleasure chemical; dopamine. It is the same chemical we get when we make love or when we check WhatsApp or Facebook.

So, Chris Bailey explains what you can do to avoid distraction, scatter focus, rediscover boredom and thus minimise the dopamine effect.

    3. How A Student Changed Her Study Habits By Setting Goals And Managing Time - Pomodoro Technique

    Why watch this?

It might be difficult to predict how much time you need to complete a study on any given topic until you do it. Time management is a major concern for most students. Are you as productive and efficient as you can be? How to avoid boredom while studying and concentrate effectively is a very common question for students.

Yana Savistsky, a high school junior, shares a technique in her TEDx talk to make the most of the study hours and achieve goals. This technique is known as the Pomodoro technique which helps students stay focused and concentrated without any distraction for specific time intervals. She explains how this technique changed her perception and action toward her work. Learn about setting up a goal and managing time according to your goal and achieving it. 4. Grit: The Power Of Passion And Perseverance.

    Why watch this?

In this TEDx talk, Angela Lee Duckworth tells that she left a high demanding job of the time in consulting and took a job teaching Maths in a New York public school, lastly, she moved to a graduate college to become a psychologist. During this period she realised that it is not only IQ that successful people have but there is much more than your IQ or your ability to learn anything easily and quickly that determines success.

What is grit? It is all about passion and perseverance for the long term. It is about having stamina, sticking with your future, not just for the day or for the week but for years and working hard to make your dream come true. Grit is not like a sprint but a marathon.

She further reveals the secret to achievement, that it is not only talent but a blend of persistence and passion, she called this “Grit”. After several years of teaching, she concluded that we need a better understanding of learning and students from a psychological and motivational perspective. Know how you can imbibe grit regardless of circumstances or IQ by watching this TEDx talk.

    5. What Do The Top Students Do Differently?

    Why watch this?

The toppers must be having a specific pattern of studying that differentiates them from the average students. This specific pattern of studying helps them to understand the tough topics more readily and thus get a good rank in entrance examinations such as NEET or JEE.

In this TEDx talk, Douglas Barton, global chairman and founder of Elevate Education, tells about his experience of the last 13 years that he spent benchmarking the practice of toppers to identify what exactly drives the student's performance. Do the toppers get the top result because they are smarter? What were the three findings of Douglas Barton? Can hard work alone take you to the top?

Know more about what are those 13 skills or habits or patterns that differentiate toppers from low performing and middle performing students. What is the skill set used by the toppers? Can these skills be taught and used by the students to improve their results? Douglas Barton explains the top 2 skills out of 13 in this TEDx talk.

    Why watch this?

Have you ever thought that you will never have free time to learn anything new? Most of us had this thought as it takes enough time to learn anything such as a new skill. However, some enjoy learning new things. It starts with getting curious about something, diving in, and then learning using the trial and error method. And eventually, they become pretty good at that. But the question is how long does it take to acquire a new skill or learn anything new.
