In the 21st century, the world economy relies heavily on shipping as it is cheaper and eco-friendly compared to other modes of transportation. There is no doubt then that such a magnanimous trade and transport system requires a workforce that is willing to embark on a sailor’s journey. The life of a seafarer revolves around travelling from one port to another, managing the ship, and its equipment and ensuring that the cargo reaches its destination in time. It is a demanding job that requires the seafarer to stay onboard the ship for three to six months at a stretch.

Mostly, people choose to work in the maritime industry due to the good pay scale and tax-free income. Seafarers also get a slightly better opportunity to travel the world and meet new people. You can join the merchant navy after Class 12, all you need 60 per cent or above in PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) and those wanting to join after class 10 need to have 40 per cent or above. Selection criteria depends on clearing the entrance exam, interview, and physical examination. To work as a seafarer you also need to clear the eye test.
