    Higher Education is becoming costly by the day and the best way to tide over financial burdens is to avail of scholarships.They are usually awarded to someone who has successfully completed an exam or won a competition. Though a number of scholarships are available, even those who are in dire need of them may not be aware of it. So, here is a list of scholarships awarded by the Indian government and also non-governmental organizations. Going through this list will help you in a big way if you are from economically weaker backgrounds. These scholarships are either merit-based or based on the performance in entrance exams that are specific to particular scholarships and focus on the students of Class 8.

    National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme

    Tens of thousands of scholarships are awarded under this scheme to meritorious students whose parents' total annual income is less than Rs 1.5 lakh. The scholarship will be worth Rs 12,000 per year, or Rs 1000 per month. To be eligible, the applicants must receive a clear promotion from Class VIII to Class IX. The exam consists of two parts – the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

    A student must score at least 55% in Class VII examinations to be eligible for the scholarship selection test (relaxable by 5% for students from SC/ST).

    Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Minorities

    The scholarship aims to encourage parents belonging to minority communities to send their children to school and lighten their financial burden. Students belonging to six notified minority communities – Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jain and Parsis (Zoroastrians) can apply for the scholarship.

    Under this scheme, financial assistance will be provided in the form of a Rs 500 admission fee, a Rs 350 tuition fee, and a Rs 600 maintenance allowance (Rs 100 for day scholars).

    The scholarship will be awarded to only those students who have secured not less than 50% marks in their previous final examination and their parents’ annual income is not more than Rs 1 lakh, including all sources.

    Cultural Talent Search Scholarship Scheme

    The Center for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) implements the Cultural Talent Search Scholarship Scheme. The goal of this programme is to provide specialized training in numerous cultural sectors to gifted youngsters, with a special emphasis on rare and endangered art forms. The shortlisted individuals would be paid Rs 3,600 per year. In addition, the amount paid by the candidate to an institution/guru/teacher to acquire specialized training will be reimbursed up to Rs 9,000 per year.

    CCRT shortlists applications from students aged 10 to 14 years for the programme. Applicants must be enrolled in a recognised school or belong to a family that engages in traditional performing arts.

    CSIR Innovation Award For School Children

    The scholarship is awarded by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The scheme's goal is to encourage school students to develop a scientific temperament and an innovative spirit. Rs 1,00,000 will be awarded to the 1st rank holder of the competition.. Students who are under the age of 18 on January 1 are eligible to apply for the CSIR Innovation Award for School Children .A student or a group of students working together on an innovation can only submit one entry.

    Indian School Talent Search Exam

    Indian School Talent Hunt Exams (ISTSE) are international talent search examinations for Indian schools, designed to assess the students' overall intelligence.The purpose of the examination is to determine the general intellectual potential of students in Class 1 to 10.

    The exam is conducted both online and offline. This test can be taken from the comfort of a student's home. They only require a webcam and a live internet connection on a laptop, desktop, or tablet. The offline exam will be conducted at the school.

    It is a single paper examination in which the 1st rank holder will be awarded Rs 1,500 per month for 12 months along with a Topper Shield.

    All India Scholarship Test Exam (AISTE)

    AISTE is a non-profit organisation which conducts merit-based national education and scholarship examination programme that aims to provide financial assistance to students for their welfare and education in order to help them thrive. Students studying in Class 4 to Class 12 can apply for the AISTE scholarship exam online.Scholarships range in value from Rs 10,000 to Rs 90,000, with the first-place winner of the national level scholarship receiving Rs 90,000, books for a year, and an excellence certificate.

    National Scholarship Exam (NSE)

    NSE is conducted by the non-profit organization called NICE Foundation, that works in the fields of education, commercial training, outdoor activity and social activity. The NICE Foundation’s goal is to prepare future generations by offering an effective learning environment that allows students to compete in a global economy.

    It is a single-paper online exam, which is open to any student of Class 5 to a degree or diploma.The first rank holder would be paid Rs 12,000 per year. The exam fee will be Rs 400. It is held in December in online mode.

    The NSE Exam allows students to practise and be more careful while answering questions. The questions and grading scheme are set up in such a way that a student's decision-making and thinking abilities can improve.

    NATIONWIDE EDUCATION AND SCHOLARSHIP TEST (NEST)

    Nationwide Education and Scholarship Test is widely known as NEST by most students across India. This scholarship test was designed to reward talented students of India with a handsome scholarship amount to encourage them to pursue higher education.

    The (NEST scholarship is for students enrolled in science, engineering, and medical programmes from Class 7 to postgraduate level. NEST has a variety of levels and Class 8 students fall into the NEST Basic category.

    The programme provides good scholarships to talented students to inspire them to pursue their education with greater zeal and interest. The first rank holder of NEST will receive a scholarship of Rs 20000.

    The exam will be held online on 29th May 2022 and the NEST Basic Category exam fee is Rs 450.

    Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan

    Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan (VVM) is a national initiative that aims to promote science among Class 5 to Class 11 students. Students from the State Boards, Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Board and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are eligible to appear for the exam.

    National level winners will receive a participation certificate, a memento from the national camp, and cash prizes ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 25,000, depending on the rank.

    Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan has also introduced a Bhaskara Scholarship of Rs 2000/- per month to national winners (Himalayans) for a year.

    The exam fee is Rs 100 and it is usually held in the months of November and December.

    VVM is a collaborative effort between Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA) and Vigyan Prasar, an independent organization under the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
