In India, both government and private institutions offer engineering courses. A major entrance examination that opens the doors to engineering aspirants for these two types of institutions is the Joint Entrance Examination Main or JEE Main. In 2021, at least 1,628 institutions offered admissions based on the JEE Main scores.

A lot of reputed private institutions also conduct their own engineering entrance exams. One of them is SRM University. It conducts the SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination (SRMJEEE full form) for admissions to its various undergraduate programs. Let’s have a look at the similarities and differences between the JEE Main and SRMJEEE in terms of syllabus, exam pattern, and marking scheme. This will help the aspirants to get a competitive edge in both exams.

    JEE Main: Introduction

JEE Main is a national level undergraduate engineering entrance examination. JEE Main is also the first stage for getting admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) through JEE Advanced. The National Testing Agency (NTA), an Indian government agency that conducts entrance examinations for higher educational institutions, conducts JEE Main.

By qualifying JEE Main, candidates can get admission in the following institutions:

    • Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)

    • National Institutes of Technology (NITs)

    • Centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs) and

    • Many other private colleges/institutes.

    SRMJEEE: Introduction

The SRMJEEE is the exam conducted by the SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) for admission in undergraduate programs such as B.Tech and health science. SRM joint engineering entrance examination (SRMJEEE) is conducted to get admission in B.Tech programs offered in SRM IST Chennai (Kattankulathur, Vadapalani, Ramapuram, Tiruchirappalli and Delhi - NCR Campus - Ghaziabad (UP), SRM University - Sonepat, Haryana and SRM University, AP - Andhra Pradesh.

SRMJEEE, JEE Main Exam Patterns Compared

The duration of Joint Entrance Exam (JEE Main) Paper 1 is 3 hours. Recently, the pattern for JEE Main (Paper 1) was modified by introducing the numerical questions in the examination. There are a total of 90 questions in the paper, out of which answering 75 is compulsory. The Paper consists of three sections:

    • Physics

    • Chemistry

    • Mathematics

JEE Main has two sections for each subject. Section 1 has 20 multiple choice questions (MCQs) while section 2 has 10 Numerical Questions(NQ) out of which one can choose any five.

    Also Read,

SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Exam (SRMJEEE) is for 2 hours and 30 minutes long with a total of 125 multiple choice questions. The paper consists of five sections:

    • Physics

    • Chemistry

    • Mathematics/Biology

    • Aptitude

    • English

It is mandatory to answer all the sections. There are 40 questions of Mathematics/Biology, 35 questions of Physics, 35 questions of Chemistry, 10 questions of Aptitude, and 5 questions of English.

Candidates who attempted Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Aptitude, and English in SRMJEEE are eligible for all the B.Tech degree programs whereas candidates who attempted Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Aptitude, and English are only eligible for B.Tech Biotechnology and all its specialisations and B.Tech Biomedical Engineering.

JEE Main, SRMJEEE: Differences And Similarities

Both JEE Main and SRMJEEE, are now conducted in computer-based mode. JEE Main was held twice in the years 2019 and 2020 and four times in 2021. SRMJEEE is organised thrice a year. In both the examinations, the best score out of the total attempts is taken into consideration.

Number of students appearing in the JEE Main examination is much higher than the number of students appearing in SRMJEEE.

In 2021, over 10.48 lakh students registered for the four sessions of JEE Main and about 9.39 lakh candidates finally appeared. Through JEE Main or JEE advanced, 52,453 seats are directly filled, including 16,232 seats in IITs and 36,221 seats in NITs, CFTIs, IIITs, and also many seats in private colleges.

Marking scheme: In JEE Main, four marks are awarded for each correct answer and one mark is deducted for each wrong answer for MCQs, and no marks are deducted in the case of NQs. In SRMJEEE, 3 marks are awarded for each correct answer and no mark is deducted for the wrong answer.

Number of attempts: An aspirant can give JEE Main for three consecutive years starting from their first attempt right during or immediately after Class 12 whereas only those candidates who have passed the qualifying examination in not more than two attempts including the appearance for improvement will be considered for admission to SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST).

SRMJEEE Vs JEE Main: Syllabus, Subject-Wise Strategy

SRMJEEE is comparatively easier when compared to JEE Main. A student preparing for JEE Main can also appear for SRMJEEE as the difficulty level of SRMJEEE is much lower than JEE Main. The major difference between both the examinations is the presence of sections of English and Aptitude in SRMJEEE. The subject-wise differentiation of chapters in the two examinations is given below.

    BIOLOGY

    Syllabus compared

The biology section is not available in JEE Main examination but in SRMJEEE, it is compulsory to attempt the biology section for those students who opted for BPCEA (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, English, Aptitude).

    ENGLISH AND APTITUDE

The English and Aptitude section is also not in the syllabus of JEE Main but asked in SRMJEEE. In SRMJEEE, the English section is all about the comprehension type questions in the form of short passages or lines of poems or a dialogue and questions based on that. Each question will be a MCQ with 4 options.

In the Aptitude section, questions can be asked primarily from the following topics:

    • Number System

    • Statistics

    • Percentage

    • Profit and Loss

    • Quadratic Equation

    • Geometry

    • Arrangement

    • Direction Sense test

    • Linear Equation

    • Trigonometry

Is SRMJEEE easier than JEE Main?

Yes, studying for JEE Main is sufficient for SRMJEEE excluding English and Aptitude part. JEE Main syllabus covers all the topics of PCM that are asked in SRMJEEE but studying for SRMJEEE is not enough for JEE Main.

The only difference between both the exams is the structure of the question paper and the presence of the sections of Biology (for those students who opted for BPCEA), English, and Aptitude in SRMJEEE. One should practice various types of questions from reference books. Practice as many questions as you can.

    How Should One Prepare?

SRMJEEE consists of more questions as compared to JEE Main. Candidates can score heavily in the Aptitude and English sections. One must attempt past years’ papers and mock papers for both the examinations as the structure of both the examinations is different. Since both are online exams, practicing online mock tests will help the candidates in bettering their skills and also boost their speed and accuracy.

    • Create a study timetable and follow it

    • Start studying the concepts from NCERT thoroughly and get thorough knowledge of the concepts using reference books

    • While studying for long hours, the Pomodoro technique proves to be efficient. In this time management technique, you divide your study time into 25-minute intervals, separated by five-minute breaks. These gaps are called Pomodoros. After about four Pomodoros, you take a long break of about 15 to 20 minutes. This is a proven technique for developing a long sitting routine.

    • Create notes of your own

    • Be consistent in studies

    • Use diagrams and flowcharts

    • Solve question papers from previous years

    • Make a proper strategy for solving the question paper so that you can optimise your score.
