Moving from one city to another in search of better opportunities is a very common practice. Quality education or well-paying jobs all leading to a better life are probably the most important reasons why one decides to move out of their comfort zone.  Read on to know how Rahul Bevara, a student and Swath R, a software professional made Hyderabad their home away from home.

Hyderabad, the city of pearls or the famous Hyderabadi biryani, is India's fourth most populated city. After Bangalore, Hyderabad is an emerging IT (Information Technology) centre. Prestigious institutes like the University of Hyderabad, Osmania University, and 11 more institutes attract students across India whereas progressive opportunities offered by the presence of companies such as Microsoft, Google, Tech Mahindra and Facebook make Hyderabad an ideal location for job seekers as well.

The people of Hyderabad do speak and understand Hindi, English, and other south Indian languages. The city is on its way to becoming a cosmopolitan with upmarket malls, eateries and a good public transportation system. Rahul Bevara, student at Osmania University and Swathi R, a software professional with Shure Audio Technologies Pvt. Ltd, tell us how.

How much do you pay for the rent?

Rahul: I am a second-year student. In my first year, I opted to stay in the hostel on the Osmania University campus but as of now, I am living in one BHK flat shared among the three of us. I wanted more independence because I wanted to work a bit during the evening, so I found renting a flat off campus would be good. The rent is Rs 12,000 per month including water, wifi and electricity costs. It is approximately Rs 4,000 per student per month.

Swathi: I live in the Kothapalli area because it is a pretty clean and peaceful area. I share the 2 BHK apartment with another female roommate. The rent is Rs 18,000 and almost Rs 2000 for water, wifi, electricity and monthly maintenance of the building. So, I have to pay Rs.10,000 per month.

How much do you pay for food?

Rahul: We have got gas, utensils and a small refrigerator. It all cost us around Rs 8,000. We know how to cook and that saves us a lot of money. We spend almost 100 rupees every day on milk and groceries. I think Rs 3, 000 per month per person is more than enough to get groceries and get gas if it runs out. We are planning to sell gas, utensils and a refrigerator to our juniors when we leave here. When we don’t want to cook, there are a lot of options available. One can quickly get breakfast of idli and dosa for just 50 bucks and lunch and dinner for Rs 150 each. We cook most of the time, but even if we go out, This all is within Rs 3, 000 per month if we are not reckless with our spending.

Swathi: We have a maid who cooks for us. She comes twice a day. We pay her Rs. 6,000 per month. Additionally, we spent around 10,000 per month on groceries such as milk, eggs, meat, veggies, cereals and fruits. She cooks us lunch and dinner and the breakfast is managed by us. I get fruits or cereals for breakfast and even if I eat out, a maximum of Rs 100 is spent on a healthy meal. I would say, I spent somewhere around Rs 8, 000 per month on meals.

    What are travelling expenses like?

Rahul: I have a cycle that I ride almost everywhere that I have to go. I don’t spend any money on travel. But if I didn’t want to ride a bicycle, it would cost me Rs 10 to travel on a bus to reach college.

Swathi: I have worked from home since COVID-19, so I don’t have to spend anything on travel to the office. Even when I have to go to the office, I get cab services from my company.

    What about weekends and leisure?

Rahul: Weekends are meant for completing assignments. On the days I am not studying, I go out sightseeing or to the movies with my friends. In a month, I spend about Rs 1,000 on chilling out.

Swathi: The weekend is all for leisure. I like visiting cafes and malls. I spent around Rs. 4, 000 per month on food, malls, movies and fun. Some weekends I visit my family in Visakhapatnam.

Your take on the city of Hyderabad?

Rahul: I like this city. People are friendly and the food is awesome. I am here to study and that’s why my major focus is the university campus. The house rent is affordable and services like electricity, water and wifi are available 24X7. We have some good bookshops and stationery shops nearby which help us shop for our needs. I know Telugu, so it is easy for me to navigate through the city. It is a bicycle-friendly city. In total, I spent almost Rs. 8000 per month. You can even manage it for Rs. 5000 to 6000 if you look for cheaper accommodation or choose hostel facilities.

Swathi: I have spent almost five years in Hyderabad. I like almost everything about it. My area is very peaceful and green. The people are good and understanding. I speak Telugu well but even my colleagues who don’t speak Telugu find the city welcoming. It is advisable to learn a few words to be able to communicate the basics. I mostly use the cab services like Uber and Ola to travel if I have to. In total, I shell out Rs. 22,000 for a fine lifestyle in Hyderabad.
