Job Offers In Information Technology At IIMs: An Analysis

According to our detailed study and analysis of first, second and third generation IIMs, Careers360 believes that candidates who aspire to work in the Information Technology (IT) sector should set their sights on IIM Jammu, IIM Sirmaur and IIM Sambalpur. These institutes have shown a steep rise with placement in the IT sector in the last two years 2021 and 2022. Some of the most demanded sectors are Consulting; Information Technology (IT); Manufacturing; Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) etc.

Careers360 has gathered placement data of the last two years from official websites of all 20 IIMs across the country. But data for IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta and IIM Lucknow was not available and IIM Shillong, IIM Tiruchirappalli and IIM Ranchi did not share for the year 2021 hence, we will leave them out in this article.

Top Five IIMs: Placements In IT Sector

IIM Nagpur and IIM Kashipur showed an increase of 57 per cent and 105 per cent respectively in the percentage of students placed in the IT sector in one year and became part of the top five IIMs to place maximum candidates in the IT sector in 2022.

First Generation IIMs

Among all the oldest IIMs, IIM Bangalore had the highest percentage of students placed in the IT sector, as good as 20 per cent. The other first-generation institutions did not share the data or if shared, it was not comparable.

Second Generation IIMs

Here, all IIMs in the second generation had given the data on their websites. However, except for IIM Kashipur, IIM Raipur, IIM Udaipur and IIM Rohtak showed that there was a major decrease in the percentage of placement in the IT sector. Data for IIM Ranchi, IIM Shillong and IIM Tiruchirappalli was not available for 2021 and so they have been left out of our analysis.

Third Generation IIMs

IIM Jammu marked the highest percentage of jobs offered in the IT sector, but it was IIM Bodh Gaya that showed the maximum change in percentage. IIM Bodh gaya doubled the percentage of students who were offered jobs in the IT sector with respect to the previous year. While IIM Visakhapatnam and IIM Amritsar were the only third generation IIMs that showed a dip in the percentage of students placed in the IT sector.

Students who want to work in the IT sector in the future can aim at securing a seat at IIM Jammu, IIM Sirmaur and IIM Sambalpur as these campuses have shown a good placement record for jobs in the IT sector over the last two years.
