Most MBA aspirants dream to study in India's top management institutes, which is Indian Institute of Management (IIM). Many students have clear goals about their future work sector they want to work in. Some in-demand sectors are Consulting; Information Technology (IT); Manufacturing; Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) etc.
A total of 20 IIMs provide the two year full-time MBA (Master of Business Administration) programme. In this article, our focus is on job offers made in the Consultancy sector. This data is collected from the official websites of 17 IIMs data over the last four years. IIM Ahmedabad, Calcutta and Lucknow were not added because the placement data was not available on their college website. For 2021, IIM Shillong and IIM Ranchi’s data was not available and hence are not compared.
So now let’s look at all the IIMs, breaking them into three generations and reviewing them at the micro level to know how many students work in the consulting sector after graduating.
IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Shillong, IIM Indore and IIM Kashipur were the top IIMs with respect to placement in the consulting sector among the compared IIMs over the last four years.
Among all the IIMs, IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Shillong, IIM Indore and IIM Kashipur had the highest number of students placed in the consulting sector over the last four years.
The change in percentage of students getting into the consulting sector peaked for IIM Kashipur and IIM Shillong in just one year.

The first generation IIMs are the oldest IIMs, established before 2000. IIM Bangalore remained on the top position over the last four years.

The second generation IIMs are the ones established between 2007 and 2011.
Three IIMs from this group are listed among top five IIMs where maximum students were offered jobs in the consulting sector. These include IIM Raipur, Tiruchirappalli and Rohtak.

The third generation IIMs, established after 2011, had only one IIM, i.e IIM Visakhapatnam and IIM Jammu showed an increase in percentage of students who chose to work in the consulting sector in 2022. While the percentage of students dipped at the rest of the IIMs.

On an average more than 30 per cent of the students of these institutes were placed in the consulting sector during campus placement. This analysis shows a clear trend that students who want to work in the consulting sector must opt for IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Shillong, IIM Indore and IIM Kashipur, as these institutes have shown a trend with maximum placements in consulting sector at almost all IIMs.
