The COVID-19 pandemic hit India in early 2020, and nearly all engineering colleges showed a downward trend in their placement rates. Indian Institute of Technology - Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, displayed the same trend in its placement rate but the average salary commanded by its students in campus job drives rose. In fact, it has been rising for some years.
Close to 100 years old as an institution, BHU’s engineering college was inducted into the list of IITs only in 2012.
Careers360 gathered the placement data of IIT BHU through a Right to Information application and found that the institute saw a nearly seven percentage point drop in the overall placement rate in 2020-21.
For 2019 and 2020, IIT BHU was placed in the eleventh rank by the education ministry’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). In the NIRF Ranking 2021, it dropped to the fourteenth position. The overall placement percentage in 2020-21, too, had fallen by almost nine percentage points since the 2018-19 academic year.
