Although established in 1994, decades after the first lot of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) that came up in 1950’s and early 60’s, IIT Guwahati is still counted among the first generation IITs.
Analysis of data obtained through provisions in the Right to Information Act (RTI) shows that IIT Guwahati maintained a placement rate of around 80% for its undergraduate engineering (BTech) and design (BDes) students for three years, 2018-2020.
However, 2021 saw a downslide, likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on education and industry.

From the batch graduating in 2018 to the batch of 2020, the placement rate at IIT Guwahati had increased by an appreciable 7.6 percentage points.
In 2021, the overall placement percentage in the branches of engineering for which IIT
Guwahati shared data is around 78 percent, the lowest in four years.
In 2020-21 just 42 students were enrolled in Engineering Physics at IIT Guwahati. Of them, 22 sat for campus placement and 14 of them received job offers — 33.33 percent of the total students enrolled. While the percentage of students appearing for job placements from most departments hovered between 80% and 90%, two departments, Civil Engineering and Engineering Physics had the lowest percentages.

In 2020-21, 87 percent of the enrolled students registered for placement. Out of these registered students, 78 percent were placed.
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) usually are the BTech branches most in-demand but despite that, five CSE and six ECE students were not placed.
On average, the minimum salary received by all the branches of IIT Guwahati in 2020-21 was Rs 7.3 lakh per annum while the average maximum salary was Rs 45 lakh.
The CSE and ECE branches had the best placement rate as well as salary packages of the IIT Guwahati’s 2021 BTech graduates, Mathematics and Computing Engineering.
