Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee began as the first engineering college in colonial India. However, it joined the list of IITs in 2001 and currently follows the placement schedule and practices of the oldest IITs. In IIT Roorkee placement 2020-21, the average placement rate across branches stood at a little over 70 percent with students from Computer Science Engineering and two other BTech programmes landing the most jobs and lifting the average. Based on official data, Careers360 has analysed branch-wise placement trends at IIT Roorkee in 2020-21.

A total of seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) were established by 2001 in India and IIT Roorkee was the last to be added to this list. However, as an engineering college, it predates all IITs, having started as Roorkee College in 1847.
Many renamings later, it became Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in September 2001 and was declared an Institute of National Importance (INI). Data obtained through a Right of Information application shows that in the 2020-21 round of placements, Computer Science Engineering students had the highest placement rate, over 93 percent, but no department achieved 100 percent. Salary details were not available.

There was an appreciable increase in the number of graduating students, companies as well as placement rates from 2018 to 2019 BTech students. But in 2020-21, the numbers dropped sharply, below even 2018 levels, possibly due to COVID-19.
The Electronics and Communication Engineering branch shows more than a hundred percent registration for placement in 2020-21 as the data below was calculated with respect to the number of students enrolled in 2017-18. It is possible there were students from other years who did not complete their degree in four years and so, sat for placement in 2020-21.
