Jadavpur University in Kolkata, West Bengal, managed to keep its average placement rate across branches of engineering over 80 percent over the past three years, even though the COVID-19 pandemic. However, only three of the programmes recorded a placement rate of over 80 percent in 2020.
A state university, Jadavpur University’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology has been ranked among the top 20 engineering colleges in India by the education ministry’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). It has been in the top 20 since 2017.
According to data obtained through a Right to Information application, a total of 981 students who continued after the first semester were considered enrolled for the 2017-21 batch, across the sixteen branches of BTech offered by Jadavpur University.
Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering each had over a hundred students enrolled in 2017-18.
Jadavpur University managed to keep the placement record above 80 percent even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given below is the overall placement percentage from the 2018 batch to 2020 for BTech and BE students.

As per data obtained from the university, 84 percent of enrolled students registered for placement and nine percent opted out. However, there is no information on the remaining six percent — 60 students.

Electrical Engineering had the maximum number of students enrolled. Of them, 14 opted out of placements. While the 16 branches averaged over 80% placement, only a handful of BTech programmes achieved a placement rate above the average in 2020-21. These were BTech in Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, and Instrumentation and Electronics.

The average annual salary across branches was Rs 8.3 lakh. However, Civil Engineering jobs, Mechanical Engineering jobs and Chemical Engineering jobs fetched salaries that were below this average. Software engineers were in greatest demand with CSE and IT landing the highest average pay packages.

Jadavpur offers BE as well as a BTech degree in Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering where BE is a three-year programme and BTech, a four-year one. The BE group’s average salary was twice that of the BTech one. This may have been a result of the very sharp difference in the maximum salaries of the two groups — the top salary for BTech was Rs 6.5 lakh whereas the top salary for BE was nearly five times that, Rs 33.7 lakh.
