In 2020-21, 3,831 candidates and about 3,672 candidates in 2019-20 were pursuing the PhD programme at the top five state universities across the country. About just 492 scholars were successful in completing the programme in 2020-21.
The five state universities considered in the article are among the top ranked engineering colleges in the country. These are ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022. Among the five state universities, Jadavpur University and Anna University had the highest number of candidates pursuing as well as the highest number of candidates who successfully completed the PhD programme (including Integrated PhD) over the last three years.

Overall the number of candidates pursuing the PhD programmes decreased in the top five state universities over the last three years since 2018-19. However, Delhi Technological University and Anna University showed an overall increase in the same time period.
Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai had the highest changes in last three years, more than 72.6 per cent students were admitted in the PhD programme.

Most universities had a very fluctuating number of graduates over the last three years. Among all the top five state universities, only Jadavpur University, Kolkata had an overall decrease in the number of candidates who successfully completed the programme over the last three years. Rest of the universities had increased the number of PhD graduates.

Jadavpur University, Kolkata and Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur have no part-time PhD programme offered to its candidates. Hence, they have been left out from the data on institutes offering a part-time PhD.
