The top 10 engineering colleges in Maharashtra together managed a placement rate of 80 percent for the batch of BTechs enrolled from 2016 to 2020, an analysis of the latest publicly available data has shown.
The institutions shared data on intake – the number of seats – enrollment, graduation and placement for the National Institutional Ranking Framework’s (NIRF) ranking exercise. In the latest ranking, NIRF 2021, a total of 200 engineering colleges were ranked. Maharashtra had the second highest representation on this list with 19 colleges, behind by some distance from Tamil Nadu’s 36.
Of the 19 ranked, Careers360 chose to analyse data for the top 10 which includes two central institutions – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur. Despite the large number of institutions ranked, only two Maharashtra engineering colleges were in the top 20 – IIT Bombay and Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai.
The list of top 10 engineering colleges in Maharashtra to offer undergraduate (BTech or BE) programmes is given below.

BTech placements at top engineering colleges in Maharashtra
Individually most colleges of Maharashtra had at least 70 percent placement except for ICT Mumbai which could place only 38 percent of its students. The dismal situation could have been due to the COVID-19 pandemic which was just beginning to spread in 2020 – the latest year for which NIRF has data.
The table below gives absolute numbers on intake, enrollment, graduation and placement for the top colleges.

Admission to VNIT Nagpur is through the national-level Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The JEE Main also serves as a screening test for admission to BTech in the IITs for which the institutes conduct JEE Advanced. Admission in IIT Bombay is via that.
Admission to most state colleges, whether public or private, is through Maharashtra’s state entrance examination – MHT CET – conducted by the directorate of technical education. Colleges that have an “all-India” quota may accept JEE Main scores for admission as well. Some, like Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering, Pune, may conduct an exam of their own as well.
