In Maharashtra, the state’s top 10 engineering colleges together managed a placement of 67 per cent BTechs students enrolled in the 2017 - 2021 batch. For the rest, higher education was an option.
Publicly available data by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released this year had institutions across the country share data on student intake, number of seats, enrollment, graduation and placement.
In the latest ranking, a total of 200 engineering colleges were ranked. Maharashtra had the third highest representation on this list with 17 colleges, behind Karnataka’s 19 and way behind Tamil Nadu’s 35 engineering colleges.
Of the 17 ranked, Careers360 has analysed data for the top 10 which includes two central institutions – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur. Despite the large number of institutions ranked, only two Maharashtra engineering colleges were in the top 20 – IIT Bombay and Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) Mumbai.

The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune, ranked at 71, was excluded from this analysis as it offers only postgraduate programmes.
The top 10 engineering colleges in Maharashtra together saw 92 per cent of their students graduate in 2021. Of the new graduates, 67 per cent secured jobs by the end of the 2017-21 course duration.
Maharashtra’s colleges had the third highest percentage of graduates compared to five other states. Highest being Uttar Pradesh with 95 per cent, followed by Tamil Nadu 93.4 per cent. The other three states whose top 10 engineering colleges were compared are Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Maharashtra colleges performed better the previous year among the six states mentioned earlier. It had the highest placement, but in NIRF 2022 Maharashtra stood fourth among the states with just 67 per cent placement.

A large section of engineering colleges across India and ranked in the NIRF 2022 have reported enrollment figures that are higher than their total intake. This is due to the students admitted through “lateral entry”. In the case of Maharashtra, the enrollment is 15.6 percent higher than the intake.

Admission to VNIT Nagpur is through the national-level Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The JEE Main also serves as a screening test for admission to BTech in the IITs for which the institutes conduct JEE Advanced. Admission in IIT Bombay is via JEE Advanced.
Admission to most state colleges, whether public or private, is through Maharashtra’s state entrance examination – MHT CET – conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education. Colleges that have an “All-India” quota may accept JEE Main scores for admission as well. Some, like Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University College of Engineering, Pune, may conduct an exam of their own as well.
