A significant percentage (78 per cent) of students from the 2018 to 2022 batch at the top 10 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu have been placed. Tamil Nadu has always been the hub for engineering education. The state is home to numerous prestigious institutions that offer excellent engineering programmes.
According to the latest ranking by the Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023, Tamil Nadu ranks at the top in terms of the highest number of engineering colleges in a state. With a substantial 15 per cent representation in the top 100 colleges. Among these, five institutes notably secure positions in the top 20. Tamil Nadu’s list also includes the top-ranked engineering institution in the country – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras – which has topped the list since NIRF began and has consistently been a nucleus of academic excellence.

While Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) takes the lead in intake capacity, while Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering, Kalavakkam secures the highest percentage of graduating students. Surprisingly, the graduation percentage surpasses 100 per cent in some cases, attributing to lateral entry admissions.

The latest publicly available placement data illustrates significant improvement compared to the times during the Covid-19 pandemic. Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, Srivilliputtur stands out as the top-performing institution across all colleges in Tamil Nadu with an impressive placement percentage of 94. On the other hand, Anna University, Chennai, holding the 13th rank in NIRF 2023, showcases the lowest placement percentage at 63.38 per cent. Although IIT Madras secures the top rank in the NIRF ranking, its placement percentage has declined by more than nine percent compared to the previous years.
