Top 10 Engineering Colleges In Tamil Nadu Placed 66% BTechs: Latest Data

The top 10 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu together achieved a placement rate of 66 percent for the batch of BTechs enrolled from 2016 to 2020, analysis of data disclosed for a government ranking process has shown.

Tamil Nadu has the highest number of engineering colleges in the latest ranking by the ministry of education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021 – 36. Five of them are in the top 20. The total number of colleges ranked is 200. Tamil Nadu’s list also includes the top-ranked engineering institution in the country – the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras – which has topped the list since NIRF began. However, the IIT and National Institute of Technology Trichy are both central institutions.

Engineering Jobs

In the top 10 colleges, 90 of enrolled students graduated in 2020. Of them, 66 percent had been placed in jobs. The top engineering colleges in Karnataka had achieved the same placement rate but the state had only eight engineering colleges in NIRF 2021 (all were considered for the analysis) and they had together placed 5,735 students. Tamil Nadu’s top 10 placed 14,775 students between them.

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) had the highest intake – the number of seats – enrollment as well as graduating students of the top 10 colleges in Tamil Nadu. In fact, it was higher than the top colleges in five states – Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

The latest data publicly available is for the batch graduating in 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. That could be one reason for the dismal performance with placements across the board, even at IIT Madras where the placement rate was a little over 76 percent.

JEE Main, SRMJEE And More

Admission to NIT Trichy is via the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main. For IIT Madras, students have to write the JEE Advanced in addition to JEE Main. Several of the private institutions conduct their own exams, such as SRMJEE, VITEEE and AEEE. Tamil Nadu does not conduct an entrance exam for admission to state colleges. Students directly join TN engineering counselling on the basis of their Class 12 board exam results.
