But how did the other institutions fare?
As per the latest data available, the top engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu together successfully placed 75 per cent BTech graduates. The state has almost three dozen technical institutions in India’s top 200, as ranked in NIRF 2022. These include India’s top engineering college, IIT Madras, as well as NIT Trichy. But how did the other institutions fare?
It was a collective achievement of top 10 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu to get 75 per cent of their BTech graduates enrolled from 2017 to 2021 a successful job placement.
Tamil Nadu has the highest number of engineering colleges in the latest ranking by the Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022 – 35. Five of them are in the top 20. A total of 200 colleges were ranked. Tamil Nadu’s list also includes the top-ranked engineering institution in the country – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras – which has topped the list since NIRF began. However, the IIT and National Institute of Technology Trichy are both central institutions.

In the top 10 colleges, 93 per cent of enrolled students graduated in 2021. Of them, 75 per cent had been placed in jobs. The top engineering colleges in Karnataka had achieved a similar placement rate of 74.5 per cent in NIRF 2022 and they had together placed 7, 580 students. Tamil Nadu’s top 10 placed 15, 982 students between them.

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) had the highest intake hence the highest number of enrollment as well as graduating students of the top 10 colleges in Tamil Nadu. In fact, it was higher than the top colleges in five states – Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
The latest data publicly available is for the batch graduating in 2021, just when people started leaving due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That could be one reason for the improvement in performance with placements with most institutes. At IIT Madras the placement rate increased by 10 percentage points, while the overall placement among the top 10 colleges of NIRF 2022 showed an increase of nine percentage points compared to previous year’s top 10 engineering institutes.

Admission to NIT Trichy is via the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main. For IIT Madras, students have to write the JEE Advanced in addition to JEE Main. Several of the private institutions conduct their own exams, such as SRMJEE, VITEEE and AEEE. Tamil Nadu does not conduct an entrance exam for admission to state colleges. Students directly join Tamil Nadu engineering counselling on the basis of their Class 12 board exam results.
