Mostly government-funded and accessible to a large number of students, these institutes offer courses that prepare students for careers in specific fields – chemical technology, dairy development, petroleum engineering. Here are top 10 such government-funded institutes and how to get into them.
Established in 1933, the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai is devoted to education and research related to chemistry, chemical science, and technology. Set up as the University Department of Chemical Technology, popularly known as UDCT, of the University of Bombay, ICT today is a Deemed-to-be-University. The University has three campuses - ICT Mumbai, ICT-IOC Bhubaneswar and ICT Marathwada Jalna campuses.
As per the National Institutional Ranking Framework’s NIRF ranking 2021 for engineering, ICT is ranked 15th; amongst Pharmacy institutes, it was ranked fifth. What sets ICT Mumbai apart from other engineering institutes is the list of courses that it offers. **Admissions to the five- year UG course (BTechand MTech) in Chemical Technology at ICT-IOC Bhubaneswar is through JoSAA counselling while admissions to the Mumbai and Jalna campuses are through Maharashtra’s state exam, MHT CET, with a 30% quota for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main applicants.

For students who want to build their careers in foreign languages, the English and Foreign Language University (EFLU) was established in 1958. It offers seven undergraduate and 19 postgraduate programmes at its three campuses in Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Shillong,. Admission to the National Dairy Research Institute Karnal's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is through the All India Combined Entrance Exam, ICAR AIEEA (UG), conducted by the Education Division of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in New Delhi. Admission to PhD programmes at NDRI Karnal is based on scores in the institute's entrance exam.

A Deemed-to-be-University, IIST functions as an autonomous body under the department of space. It offers a BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (Avionics) and Aerospace Engineering.
