In the National Institutional Ranking Framework’s report of 100 colleges in 2023, just three were from Maharashtra. These spread over three major cities of Maharashtra- Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur. All they have togetherly saw more than 83 per cent of the 2019-2022 batch graduate. According to the latest data available, only 9.12 per cent of students were placed in jobs upon graduation. This was the lowest placement rate among top colleges of Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
The Maharashtra colleges to attain the highest rank in NIRF 2023 came in at 57– Fergusson College in Pune. In 2021, this college was at the 96th position in the NIRF list but it showed a major jump in its position in 2022.

However, student information was not provided for about more than 30 per cent of the graduating students in NIRF. This analysis is based on data that was available.

Of the five states, Maharashtra holds the second highest percentage of students who opted for higher studies – 61.52 per cent. Its placement rate, at 9.12 per cent, was the lowest. For perspective, the placement rate at the top 10 Tamil Nadu colleges was 32.37 per cent; West Bengal’s 11.3 per cent; Delhi 22.41 per cent and Kerala 17.4 per cent.

The three institutes together had more than 61 per cent of their graduates pick further studies over work, following graduation. While top colleges in Delhi, Kerala and Tamil Nadu had lower per cent students go for higher studies compared to Maharashtra.
West Bengal colleges topped, with 61.64 per cent students opting for higher studies. Tamil Nadu had the lowest percentage of students opting for further studies with just 37.15 per cent.

In NIRF 2021, four colleges were ranked from Maharashtra but in NIRF 2022, two colleges could not. Namely - Government Institute of Science and Government Institute of Forensic Science in Nagpur. While St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai made it to the list in 2022.
In the 2023 year ranking Government Institute of Science, Nagpur again proved itself and got its position, unfortunately St. Xavier’s College was not able to rank in 2023.
