    Synopsis

Placements are an important transition from student life to professional life. However, placement rates in even the best arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu have been dismal as a large section of their students chose to pursue higher education. Here’s a look at the data on intake, enrollment, graduation and placements from the top 10 colleges in Tamil Nadu.

The top 10 colleges of Tamil Nadu, ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), together saw 87.45 per cent of the students who enrolled in 2019, graduate in 2022. Of them, more than 32 per cent found job placements. This figure has increased by six percentage points compared to last year. Although this represents less than a third of the batch, this was the highest placement rate among states and Union Territories with the most top-ranking colleges – Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra and West Bengal. Plus, a large chunk of BA, BSc and similar degree holders also opted for higher studies.

In the 2023 rankings – based on data from 2021-22 academic year – Tamil Nadu had the maximum number of ranked colleges – 35 followed by Delhi with 32 colleges ranked, all affiliated to the centrally-run Delhi University. Followed by Kerala with 14 colleges; West Bengal with eight; and finally, Maharashtra, with three. These five states together accounted for 92 of the 100 colleges ranked in NIRF 2023.

Recently, NIRF made public the data on enrollment, intake – capacity, graduation and placement for all three-year undergraduate programmes received from the colleges across India.

Careers360 has used this data for the present analysis and the placement rates are based on the number of students to graduate, not the total enrollment.
