There are a total of 14,89,115 schools across India. For logistical reasons, the benefit of our readers and ease of analysis, Careers360 divided Indian states and Union Territories into six zones i.e East, West, North, South, North-East and the Central zone.
Data of all schools including government, government aided, private aided and others from Class 1 to 12 has been tracked through the UDISE+ report. Among all the six zones, schools in the south have performed best in all parameters including library, drinking water and computer labs. Let’s discuss this further.
Toilet Facilities: Of the 14,89,115 schools across India, around 14,69,891 which is around 98.71 per cent are well equipped with toilet facilities. Out of these 97.71 per cent are in the proper functioning condition.
Library: Reading is an important activity as it helps improve communication and comprehension skills, imagination and creativity and increases overall general knowledge of kids. With about 87 per cent of the Indian schools providing either a library or reading corners, the analysis shows that schools have dipped in providing functional libraries to their students.
Drinking Water: Availability of drinking water is the most basic need. Ninety eight per cent schools provide drinking water facilities, and almost 97.67 per cent of these are in proper working condition.
Computer Labs: Among all the facilities provided in the Indian schools, computer labs are the lowest one, almost lower than half of all the remaining facilities. But for making the country digitally literate more than 47 per cent of the schools are well equipped with the computer labs. Out of them around 96 per cent are in the proper working condition.

All the 36 states and union territories are divided into the six zones in India. North zone has the highest number of states as well as the highest number of schools, 4,92,332. While the north-east holds the lowest number of schools, because it includes small and less populated states.

Cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation is one of the most important things which India follows under the ‘Swachha Bharath Abhiyan’. This also seems successful with 99 per cent schools of almost four out of six zones having a proper toilet facility.
North-East remains the lowest, with around 92 per cent of the school's having toilets. And it is also the zone with the lowest percentage of schools that has working toilets.

The north zone has the highest number of schools but it remains the second lowest zone after the north-east in terms of providing a library in its schools.

East and west zones score the highest in terms of drinking water facilities offered at the schools and also in terms of functional condition. While the north zone again remained lowest.

The percentage of schools with computer labs in it was overall low in most states and union territories of India. But the north-east zone showed the lowest percentage of schools having computer labs or having labs with proper working condition.

While doing the analysis on the macro level across the nation, we can conclude that the north-east has remained lowest among all the six zones in terms of all the basic facilities such as toilets, library, drinking water and computer labs.
