Around 14,89,115 schools exist across India out of which around 33 per cent are fall in the six northern states and of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Rajasthan and four Union Territories (UTs) like Chandigarh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. For logistical reasons, we will consider these states and UTs as the North India zone.

For the purpose of our analysis, we have gathered data from the official site of Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+). It was created for Class 1 to Class 12 for planning and monitoring the District Primary Education Programme (DPEP).
The analysis was made about the basic facilities such as toilets, library or book bank or reading corner facilities, drinking water facility and computer facilities offered at schools in North India.
There are a total of 4,92,332 schools in the northern zone of our country, these schools include all schools management by government, government aided, private aided and others.

Toilet Facilities: Over 99 per cent schools have toilets and among these schools 97.5 per cent schools have toilets in proper working condition.
Library: On an average more than 81 per cent of schools in North India have either a library, a book bank or a reading corner.
Drinking water: Of the 4,92,332 schools, 98 per cent have drinking water facilities.
Computer Labs: Despite being a champion of digital technology and its relevance to the youth, this facility is not provided at many institutions. 96.7 percent of schools have functional computers facilities.

Clean hygiene and sanitation is one of the major objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission. This has seen considerable success in northern states and UTs, with only Jammu and Kashmir’s recording 96.2 per cent schools with toilet facilities, rest of the northern states recorded above 98.7 per cent and Chandigarh and Delhi marked 100 per cent schools with the 100 per cent functional toilets.

More than two-third of the north zone states were able to successfully have more than 91 per cent of their schools with a library facility.

Most schools in northern states have drinking water facilities. But Ladhak, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand recorded a large number of schools with non-functional water facilities.

In metro cities like Chandigarh, Punjab and Delhi, 100 per cent schools reported as having computer facilities most of them in good working condition.
Of the six states and UTs, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand had a very low percentage of schools with computer facilities and even a lower percentage of those schools with a functional computer system.

Among the facilities mentioned, computer facilities are least available in schools of north India. And among the schools with computer facilities, a very few of them are in working condition.
Schools in north India seem to have a good environment for the academic progress of a student. With over 90 per cent schools having basic facilities, there is still a scope for improvement, specially in the field of computer facilities and a bit in library too.
