If you want to study engineering at a top college, Vellore institute of Technology (VIT) is an ideal fit for you. Ranked 12 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021 of the Ministry of Education, VIT is one of the most sought-after engineering colleges in the country. VIT conducts its own entrance examination for engineering admissions. The advantage of appearing for Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) is that its difficulty level is easier than the Joint entrance examination Main (JEE Main) which is conducted by the government-run National Testing Agency (NTA). JEE Main candidates can also apply for VITEEE exam as the eligibility conditions don’t differ much. In this article, Careers360 analyses the differences and similarities between the two exams so that you can prepare well for both JEE Main exam and VITEEE in one go.

JEE Main: An Introduction

JEE Main is a national level engineering entrance examination. JEE Main is conducted for admission to undergraduate engineering programs and is conducted by the NTA. To gain admission in an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) you need to clear two papers: JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE Main is usually referred to as Paper 1. After qualifying JEE Main, students can get admission in the following institutions:

  • National Institutes of Technology (NITs)
  • Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)
  • Government funded technical institutions (GFTIs) and
  • Many other private colleges/institutes.

VITEEE: An Introduction

VITEEE is conducted by the VIT University for the admission in undergraduate programs such as BE and BTech. There are four VIT campuses, namely, VIT Vellore, VIT Chennai, VIT Bhopal and VIT Andhra Pradesh. Students often call it “Codetantra VITEEE” or “VITEEE Codetantra” after the company which facilitates the exam.

VIT offers 64 undergraduate courses, 35 postgraduate courses, 2 research programs, 16 integrated programs, 2 M.Tech programmes and 3 Ph.D. programmes. This article targets only the BE and BTech entrances.

JEE Main, VITEEE: Eligibility Criteria, Age

JEE Main, VITEEE: Differences And Similarities

Both the examinations, JEE Main and VITEEE are now conducted in computer based mode. The VITEEE exam is organised only once in a year whereas JEE Main was held twice in 2019 and 2020 and 4 times in 2021. And the highest score out of the total attempts was taken into consideration.

The number of students appearing in the JEE Main examination is much higher than the number of students appearing in VITEEE.

Over 10.48 lakh students registered for the four sessions of JEE Main in 2021 and about 9.39 lakh candidates finally appeared in the exam. Around 52,453 seats are directly filled through JEE Main or via JEE Advanced, including 16,232 seats in IITs and 36,221 seats in NITs, CFTIs, IIITs and the rest of the institutions accepting JEE scores whereas, VITEEE offers roughly around 5,260 seats in undergraduate programmes at VIT Vellore and Chennai campuses. As per 2021 counselling schedule the rank holders above 1,00,000 are eligible for counselling sessions at VIT AP and Bhopal campuses only.

Marking scheme: In JEE Main, 4 marks will be awarded for every correct answer and 1 mark will be deducted for every wrong Multiple Choice Question and no negative marks for Numerical Type Questions. In VITEEE, 1 mark will be awarded for every correct answer and no mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.

Number of attempts: A candidate can write JEE Main for three consecutive years whereas there is no limitation on number of attempts in the case of VITEEE.
