    Synopsis

     Just a small section of graduates from top colleges in West Bengal were placed in jobs upon graduation. But a very large number of students from these colleges opted for higher studies. Data gathered from this year’s NIRF rankings show how the colleges did individually.

    Of the batch enrolled from 2018 in the top colleges across West Bengal, 95.4 per cent finally graduated in 2021. Of these graduates, just 9.33 per cent of BA, BSc and other three-year undergraduate degree holders were placed in jobs upon graduation. A vast majority, which is 62 per cent, opted for further education.

    Compared to the other states with a high number of colleges, West Bengal had the highest percentage of students graduating. In 2022, National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), ranked 100 colleges of which seven were from West Bengal.

    The colleges shared data on intake, the capacity, enrollment, graduation and placement with NIRF which was made public recently. The latest statistics in NIRF 2022 is for the batch that was enrolled in three-year degree programmes from 2018 to 2021 with 2020-21 as the last academic year under consideration. Careers360 has used this data for the present analysis.

    Best Colleges In West Bengal: Jobs, Higher Studies

    In the NIRF 2022, West Bengal colleges shared statistics of student’s intake and enrolled of 2018-19. Together these seven colleges had an intake capacity of 6,180 students but enrolled only 5,789 students, 391 seats of these top colleges remained vacant.

    West Bengal’s top colleges had the lowest placement rate 9.33 per cent among the five states with the maximum number of colleges. Tamil Nadu’s placement rate was over 26.4 per cent; Kerala’s was 11.5 per cent; Maharashtra’s, 9.5 per cent, and Delhi’s 16.74 per cent.

    Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College shared information for almost all its students except one, with 215 students (97.3 percent) opting for higher studies, the highest percentage and the rest five students were placed.

    Higher Study: Top Colleges In West Bengal

    Ranked 97th, Midnapore College had the second highest enrollment among the seven colleges of West Bengal, but placed only 1 student (0.08 per cent) and had the lowest, that is, 12.13 per cent of its graduates opting for higher studies.

    West Bengal colleges had the highest number of graduates but the lowest placement percentage among the five states. Two colleges of West Bengal individually had the highest percentage of students going for further studies among all the colleges of these five states.
