Do certificates hold more value? Is it the learning/skill that has value or the certificate from an online program which I can put in my resume?
Both. These are not two different things, certificates represent what you have learnt. If you have the certificate without the learning that's pretty useless. In today's time, people want to know what you can do, not what piece of paper that you are carrying. So, if you have the certificate and you haven't learnt then it's not good enough but if you have learning but you don't have the certificate then the burden is on you to convince people that you have learnt that. You can do projects, create E- portfolios for yourself. There are ways for you to get noticed even without a certificate. But having a recognized certificate from a good brand just makes it easier. So, I would say that both are important and one is representing the other.
