Biomedical Engineering is an interface between medicine and engineering. It's where you apply engineering principles to solve problems in medicine
As an undergrad student, I do not know exactly what, say a biomedical engineer at a hospital or a researcher does, but here are a few fields that a biomedical engineer can work in:
Biomedical Instrumentation : From developing instruments to measure temperature to CT & MRI to therapeutic equipment like ventilators, instrumentation is what people generally associate BME with.
Biomaterials : This involves studying material science to develop biocompatible prostheses, artificial organs and drug delivery mechanisms( for instance, using nanoparticles).
Medical Imaging: It involves developing methods to visualize what's inside the body and processing these images to aid in diagnosis(for example, fusing CT and PET scan images so you can see both the structure and the functioning of the organ being imaged).
Biomechanics: This combines principles of mechanical engineering and our knowledge of human anatomy & physiology to study the mechanics of various parts of the body( for example, studying bone mechanics to develop an artificial joint).
There are many more interesting areas and all of them require knowledge in multiple domains. Check out Biomedical Engineering Society for an exhaustive list of what biomedical engineers do. .
