What is the kind of qualification that students who go to Dubai have? Is it the dual degree or BITS Pilani degree or Dubai degree?
First of all, I wanted to clarify one thing that when we admit a student, we admit to a degree program. We don't admit anybody to a dual degree program. We admit to the M.Sc program, we admit to a B.A program. At the end of one year, each student has flexibility. Every student who is admitted to M.Sc can decide to continue only with M.Sc no dual degree, that option is there or if a student wants second degree in engineering or in science, there can be a case where somebody a economics and mathematics even that is allowed but a M.sc student can do engineering. We have promised every student admitted to a M.Sc degree will get an opportunity to get an engineering degree which will depend on the performance of a student in one year in BITS Pilani. So, there are few students who continue only with M.Sc Physics. After one year a student becomes a dual degree student where he works now for two degrees- engineering and science. When we went to Dubai, the Dubai government was essentially looking for engineering and not many universities in India were ready to start engineering degrees there. So, we committed ourselves to start an engineering program there that is where we still hold on to. So, the focus stays on engineering there and not on sciences in Dubai.
Coming to the qualification part, BITS Pilani is one University and has one single academic senate, one single examination board. Degrees are given with a stamp of BITS Pilani and that is the same degree. The transcript talks about the campus from which the student has graduated, So, the final degree will be given from BITS Pilani, not BITS Pilani, DUbai campus, transcript will mention that. Recently, UGC has told in general to mention the campus in degree that is something which may happen but as of now degrees are given by BITS Pilani ven for Dubai students.
