HPU Shimla: Admission, Courses, Fees, Placements

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is a public state university established in 1970 by an Act of Himachal Pradesh State Assembly. The university is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). NAAC has accredited the varsity with an ‘A’ grade. The campus of the university covers an area of 200 acres. HPU Shimla has 34 teaching departments and a total of 170 faculty members. Currently, 179 colleges are affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University. Students can enrol into diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level courses. 

The popular courses offered by the university are B.B.A, B.C.A., M.Com, M.Tech. etc. Students are required to fulfil the eligibility criteria to be eligible for admission. HPU Shimla offers admission on the basis of the entrance exam and merit of the last qualifying examination. The university conducts an entrance examination for admission to its various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The varsity offers admission to M.Sc., M.A., MPEd, L.L.B, M.Ed., M.Com, M.B.A. and M.F.A. on an entrance exam basis. Whereas admission to the B.C.A. programme is given on a merit basis. 

The university provides global exposure to the students. It has collaboration with various foreign institutes like Altai State Technical University, Russian Federation, Altai State Agrarian University, Russian Federation etc. Himachal Pradesh University also provides scholarships to its students. For the convenience of students, the campus has modern facilities and infrastructure.

The address of the university is Summer Hill, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. Shimla Airport is 17.8 far from the varsity. The nearest railway station is Summer Hill Railway Station. It is located 1.6 km from the campus. With a distance of 2.3 km, the Shimla Ghumarwin Road Bypass Bus Stop is the closest bus stop to the university.

Himachal Pradesh University Facilities and Infrastructure    

The campus of the varsity has modern facilities and infrastructure for the students. Library, boys hostels, girls hostels, canteen etc. are some of the Himachal Pradesh University facilities available for the students. The university has 15 hostels. Out of which 4 are boys hostels and the rest 11 are girls hostels. The hostels are located within the campus only. Additionally, HPU Shimla has an auditorium, health centre, wifi and alumni association. The varsity also focuses on sports activities. HPU Shimla sports facilities give students the opportunity to relax and have fun during their free time. Both indoor and outdoor sports facilities are available in the campus premises.

Himachal Pradesh University Courses

The state university offers a total of 98 programmes. The courses are offered at diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. The maximum number of courses are provided at the postgraduate level. A few of the HPU Shimla UG courses are L.L.B, B.C.A. etc. Whereas, M.Tech., M.Com, M.A. etc. are some of the popular Himachal Pradesh University PG courses. The eligibility criteria of Himachal Pradesh University courses are different for each course.

Himachal Pradesh University Admissions

There are two ways by which students can take admission in the varsity. The university offers admission on the basis of entrance exam and merit route. At the undergraduate level, admission to B.C.A. and L.L.B programmes is offered on the basis of merit of the last qualifying examination and entrance exam score respectively. HPU Shimla admission to PG courses - M.Sc., M.A., M.Ed., MPEd, L.L.B, M.Com, M.B.A. and M.F.A. is done on the basis of candidates performance in the entrance exam conducted by the university. As per Himachal Pradesh University admission policy, only candidates meeting the eligibility criteria are eligible for admission in the various programmes offered by the university.

• Fulfil eligibility criteria and fill the application form.

• Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of 10+2 marks.

• Shortlisted candidates, visit campus.

• Submit documents and deposit programme fees.

Himachal Pradesh University Scholarships

The university provides multiple scholarships to its students and motivates them to do better in academics and sports. Himachal Pradesh University scholarships are offered to students who have excellent records in sports, academics and cultural activities. The scholarships can be availed by students during the time of admission. Furthermore, the HPU Shimla scholarship - HP Government Poverty cum Brilliance Scholarship is provided to graduated unemployed students. Apart from scholarships, the varsity also provides fee concessions. 10% of students from every class are offered fee concessions by the university. It must be noted that Himachal Pradesh University scholarships are offered to a limited number of students only.

Himachal Pradesh University Placements

In 2019-20, around 270 students from UG and PG programmes got placed at various organisations. Companies such as HCL, Cipla, Microsoft etc. regularly participate in HPU Shimla placement drives and hire students. A placement cell is there at the campus. The placement cell ensures maximum numbers of students are placed and students don't face any difficulties in finding job opportunities. To prepare students for the placement drives, guest lecturers for industry professionals, seminars, workshops etc. are conducted by the placement cell of the university. As per the Himachal Pradesh University placement report for the year 2019-20, undergraduate 4 years students got Rs. 4 LPA median salary.
