About IIT Mandi

The foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi was laid on 24th February 2009. The institute is situated in Kamand Valley in Himachal Pradesh. IIT Mandi ranked 41st in the engineering category and 82nd in the overall category in NIRF 2021 Rankings. To drive the developmental activities for IIT Mandi, a distinct IIT Mandi Cell was established in IIT Roorkee in March 2009. The issues pertaining to campus development were highlighted in a project report which was submitted to the Government of Himachal Pradesh in the month of April in that very year. In later months, the institute was registered as a society in the state of Uttarakhand. Further development plans were made for the institute under the Ministry of Education. Today the institute has developed to include courses from disciplines of science, technology to arts. The college has become a major attraction for students because of its facilities like library, hostel, internship opportunities, placements and scholarships. The college functions to fulfil its vision of leading in science & technology and encouraging an atmosphere of creativity and innovation.

The full form of IIT Mandi is the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi. It is located in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.

IIT Mandi Location

IIT Mandi is located in the Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh. The Kamand Valley engulfs the institute which is situated on the banks of a tributary of Beas river. The Mandi town is not far away from the village in which IIT Mandi is situated – only 14 km away. The climate varies from one month to another due to the high elevation of the land. Nevertheless, the scenic beauty and the shops, markets, restaurants, parks, banks, and other amenities surrounding the institute makes it a comfortable spot.

Photocatalysts are produced by the IIT Mandi researchers.

Researchers of IIT Mandi have introduced new Photocatalysts that convert plastics to hydrogen and other useful products when exposed to lights. It can also be used for photoreforming of food waste and other biomass and also for breaking down pollutants in water.

IIT Mandi will organise a school camp on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in July 2022.

IIT Mandi Infrastructure & Facilities

IIT Mandi’s Central Library has over 13000 books and allows access to more than 3000 e-journals. Audio-visual materials as CDs and DVDs are also available for students and faculty members. IIT Mandi facilities include Advanced Materials Research Centre which has a multi-disciplinary platform for researchers and scholars with advanced research materials for in-depth research on areas ranging from physics, environment, chemistry, biology, engineering to solar cells, nanotechnology, magnetism, drug delivery etc.

There are four virtual classrooms in IIT Mandi. The cyber centre is well equipped with 404 Intel Xeon processors with a memory of more than 1 TB. IIT Mandi has a medical clinic that is well equipped with doctors, nurses and pharmacists to provide healthcare facilities at almost all times. The Institute consists of several hostels – for girls and boys. These hostels provide accommodation to UG and PG students. There are also staff and faculty quarters on the campus. Other than that, for any outside visitor, there are guest houses too. Banks are available on the main campus with ATM facilities.

IIT Mandi Scholarships

IIT Mandi offers scholarships to its eligible students studying at different educational levels. HTRA Scholarship is offered to students who are studying B. Tech. and M.Sc. courses (Chemistry and Mathematics) and belong to the General and the OBC category. They are allowed Rs. 16,000 per month during the first two years and Rs. 18,000 per month in the next two years. Scholarship to Institute is offered to 1000 students studying at IIT Mandi. The students whose family income is less than Rs. 6 lakh can apply. Merit cum means Bursary and Post Matric Scholarship are also offered to the students of IIT Mandi.

IIT Mandi Placement

All the placement related activities of IIT Mandi are handled by the Career and Placement Cell, commonly known as CnP. The cell organises various placement activities to help students prepare for the final rounds of IIT Mandi placement process. According to the official placement brochure of IIT Mandi fo 2020-21, 81% of the registered and eligible undergraduate students were placed. The institute has a Career and Placement Cell (CnP) that handles all the placement associated activities of the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi. IIT Mandi Placement Process

Step 1: The placement cell performs the duty of a negotiator and connects the interested candidates with the organisation by sending invitations of the placement drive along with the placement brochure to esteemed companies and organizations.

Step 2: The organisations who show interest in IIT Mandi’s Placement drive accept the invitation and confirm their active presence on the scheduled date of the drive.

Step 3: The organisation will send the eligibility criteria required for the selection process, the designation of the candidate, CTC and other relevant details about the recruitment.

Step 4: The interested candidates will forward their resumes to the placement cell or directly to the organisation if they meet the required qualification and other eligibility criteria.

Step 5: The organisation will conduct various rounds like Personal Interview, Group Discussion, Aptitude Test, Written Test, to check the suitability of the candidate for the post offered.

Step 6: The candidates who are selected after clearing the interview process are hired by the organisation after meeting all the requirements.

As per the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi placement report 2021 (phase 1 till December), 137 students have been placed. A total of 102 companies have participated in the placement drive. The Institute has seen a rise in the average salary by 13%, median salary by 16%, and maximum salary by 9%, as compared to the previous year. Till now, a total of 51 pre-placement offers (PPO) have been made to the students.

IIT Mandi B. Tech. admissions are based on the rank that students attain in the JEE Advanced examination, which is held once every year. The cut-off ranks are released by JoSAA, in the form of opening and closing ranks. The stages are explained below:

The candidates must register for JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations.
The candidates must appear for JEE Main and should be able to make the cut-off. Once they have achieved the required cut-off, they become eligible to appear for JEE Advanced examination.
The candidates must score well in the JEE Advanced examination. JoSAA releases the cut-off based on college ranking.
Shortlisted candidates must appear for a counselling session to obtain the specialisation.

IIT Mandi M. Tech. admissions are based on the GATE scores that the students obtain. GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is conducted by IISc with 7 IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board and other government education councils and committees. Students who are interested in pursuing M. Tech from IIT Mandi must follow the steps given below:

The students must register on the IIT Mandi Admission Portal.
Post the GATE Exam score release, the students must fill in the details like COAP ID, GATE scores and specialisation preference.
The students then should pay the application fee.
Post that, the students are invited for an interview or counselling, which they must attend.

For applicants who are admitted to the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, are eligible for scholarships. The IIT Mandi scholarships are awarded based on merit and category of applicants. Ph.D. candidates must have a Master's degree with a good academic record in an eligible discipline relating to the Ph.D. applied for.

Scholarship to Institute

A scholarship is awarded to a total of 1,000 students each year who are eligible to receive a monthly grant of Rs. 7,800 for the follow-up to PG studies.

The Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs offers the National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students to schedule students from the Tribe category for courses above the postgraduate level, such as M. Phil and Ph.D. Under the programme, the central government ministry provides a total of 1,000 scholarships and 750 fellowships with a grant of Rs. 28,000 per month. For these IIT Mandi scholarships and fellowships, only students whose annual family income is less than Rs. 6 lakh annually can apply.

Merit cum means Bursary

An MCM Scholarship funded by the Central Government is designed to meet the financial needs of students residing anywhere in India. Those MCM grants funded by the state government provide the students of the respective states with monetary assistance.

Scholarship from the Central Sector (Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment)

The SC students who are granted admission to the notified institutions following the standards prescribed by the respective institutions shall, in the extent of the number of bonds allocated to them, be eligible for a Scholarship from the Central Sector. If the number of students admitted is greater than that of awards, the bursary will be limited to the top students in the intersectoral merit list. The other SC students who are admitted to the institute in different courses shall qualify for this Minister's Central Sponsored Post Matric Scholarship (PMS) provided that the other students are eligible.
